Legal requirements for travel from Canada to USA and back again?

If a UK citizen visits Canada for 5 months and then visits the USA for 1 month can that UK citizen then go back to Canada for a further 5 months without obtaining a visitors visa?

Answer:
You should contact the Canadian consulate or embassy in your home country to be sure, regardless of what answers you receive here.

You probably cannot "visit" for that length of time without something more than a tourist or general travel visa.
