If my passport is invalid, and i want to go away shortly how can i speed up the process of getting a passport?

If you're in the UK you can get it done the same day by going to the passport office.
expedite which will take 2 weeks.
you can pay extra and make an appointment at the passport office where you should be able to collect it at the end of the day as its a renewal or if theyre particularly busy you should have it sent to you within 3 days tops.
ask for rush delivery...it costs a * load though.
Take time off of work and go to the local passport office.

You can go to the passport office and pay extra but you have to make an appointment now, you just can't "turn up".
Don't listen to the other answers. Get your paper work ready and DRIVE to the nearest place that actually processes the paper work: large cities such as DC, NY, Phila, etc.
Forget about calling these places for info (as instructed on State Dept website). Instead, call the Secretary of State whose office phone number is on the State Dept web site directory. Condi won't answer the phone, but her secretary will -and will help you if you are A) desparate and B) sincere and C) talk nicely.
I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP. Had the same situation myself about 5 years ago. Became frustrated with the recorded announcements at all the passport office sites, and so looked around the State Dept. web site for some other number to call. Lo and Behold -THERE was Colin Powell's office number, really and truly. So, I called. Phone was answered by a lovely lady who sympathized with my problem and directed me to the Philadelphia Customs Office for "walk-in" service. I was about an hour in line, and my heart stopped when the agent said they'd drop it in the mail in about 2 weeks (that would have been too late for me) so I said I was told by the Secretary of State's office that I could have it right NOW if I went to Philly. And so the agent said, "If you can wait about an hour, we can have it for you." I did, and THEY did ...and I was outta there!
Important point: if you make your own photo -as I did- make certain it meets all the technical requirements as to size of photo and size of your face IN the photo. Otherwise, have a passport photo taken. As you might guess, photo service is usually available across the street from the passport agency -but at a high price.

You could've slept with David Blunket if he was still around, but I suppose you'll need to pay the extra charge for speedy processing.
You'll need to go to the passport office in person and do a lot of queueing.
Ok, since our countries are very similar in these respects, this is how it works in the US, specifically NY. If you want a Passport immediately you can head to Manhattan to the Office of Passport Services with the proper ID and pictures. You wait a few hours and you can have one that day.
I hope that England would have a similar set up.

Contact your nearest Passport Agency office, make an appointment & you can get it rushed through. If its straight forward I believe you can get it done in a day - if its not it'll take upto a fortnight.
Put twenty quid inside it when you send it off.
go to the nearest passport office and do it on the spot but i understand a lot more folk do that so be prepared to queue
get it at passport office same day.it is expensive!
