In the USA it's called the H1b Visas and is just another way of circumventing jobs for U.S. Citizens.
Your degree obviously wasn't in English.

Maybe nobody else wants to live in East London.It is a hole.
There was also a downside to all of that glorious British Empire stuff which is a lot of the subjects of the former colonies were given easy access into the country.
There was a shortage of manual labor and the Government were all too happy to let them in.After the first wave you get the immediate family,extended family and so on
Traditionally the idea in Asians minds is that the sons are more valuable than the girls and they send their sons overseas to study (the parents pay and morgage their house and car to support their son/s). There was also a lot of poor countries in asia and so asian families fled overseas (Britian was a lovely choice because the pound has always been so strong).
I suppose the easiest way to get to the UK if you are asian is if your parents were from Hong Kong and got you the British passport (when Hong Kong was still under British rule) that way you could easily get the documentation required to be in the UK.
PS You might be finding it a bit difficult to get a work permit and live in the UK because of your English skills displayed here.
