Hispanic/Spanish - what's the difference?
Does this term refer to the indigenous and/or mestizo (mixed European and indigenous race) people of Mexico, Central and South America who speak Spanish or to all Spanish speaking people worldwide?
Answer:
Hispanic actually means a person coming from a Spanish speaking country. Hispanic has nothing to do with race or religion. There are Hispanics who have blonde hair blue eyes and fair skin, some are olive skinned. Or if your from Cuba or Puerto Rico you can be of African back-ground. Also, you can be a combination of white, indigenous, and African back grounds. There is also a pretty good sized Asian population in South America, the former president of Peru is Asian. So basically it just means coming from a Spanish speaking country.
Spanish is the language spoken in Spain, and in Latin America minus Brazil they speak Portuguese.
Spanish also means a person from Spain the country. A person can be both Hispanic and Spanish.
However there is a lot of Europeans in Mexico. You just have to get out of the tourist areas.
I'll agree with the person above me. I have friends who are Jewish and are from Argentina and they consider themselves Hispanic.
I give myself as an example on my mother's side the family went from France to Mexico then the family went to Texas. My father's family is from Spain then moved to Northern Mexico/Texas. I consider myself white Hispanic (Mexican American), because I have no indigenous back-ground.
I can't speak for anyone else but when I say Hispanic/Latino I refer to South Americans, Central Americans and Caribbean people that speak Spanish. Correct me if I'm wrong.
hispanics are spanish.
latinos are from latino america!!
PROUD TO BE MEXICAN!!!!!!
Spanish, as a race, refers to the people of Spain.
Hispanic usually refers to people of South America.
In addition, Spain, as a country, speaks different Spanish than Hispanic countries, such as Mexico. Some of the Spanish people from Spain believe that Hispanic Spanish, such as Mexican Spanish, is an incorrect form of Spanish.
Often times, they can't understand each other.
i dont think it makes a difference
I am only guessing but Hispanic is a shared language, shared history and shared culture, Brazil speaks Portuguese, but has a shared culture and history with others in the region. Spanish it a language
to me there is no differance but they get so mad when u call them the wrong thing like if u call an hispanic spanish they will get so mad and want to fight u.
Hi Chickadee-I can tell you only the term Hispanic is used in my state because it was settled by Spain in 1590. My Hispanic friends have blue eyes and can trace their ancestry back 15 generations. I don't care much for political correctness unless a term is absolutely offensive, but to me, Hispanic means someone whose ancestors came from the Iberian penisula. Our Hispanics are from both Spain and Portugal, but we are the only officially bi-lingual state in the nation. That's in our state Constitution. My niece, who is half-Peruvian, refers to herself as a "Latina."
Only the thought process. ie: LEGAL and IL-LEGAL. Easy picture to understand!
Spanish is the language. Hispanic refers to anyone from anyone from any race who is native of Latin America or Spain. For example my wife's mother is Israeli and her father is German but my wife was born and raised in Venezuela, making her Hispanic.
