What is the I-20 ?
Answer:
I-20 is a legal document from the school, a proof that you are accepted by the school. You can still travel outside of the country, but you will need a signature from school first.
Unless you have J-1, your student visa should be long enough to cover the length of your school time in the US. If you have J-1, you will have to return to your country to renew J-1 every two years.
It is okay to stay in the US with I-20 only (but I do not recommend this way). However, if you leave the US, you will never be able to return until you get another visa from your country again.
EDIT:
I do not recommend. However, I-20 is the legal document for you to stay in the school. Visa is the legal document for you to (1) enter the US, and (2) apply for I-20. If your visa runs out, but your I-20 is good, then you can stay in the US to finish your study (in theory). Again, I do not recommend though.
