Can one become a U.S. citizen through marriage?

My husband is a legal alien and I am a U.S. citizen by birth, can he become a U.S. citizen automatically for being married to me?, or does he need to file for citizenship like everyone else? we have a 3 y.o daughter and have been married for 2 years. He has been living in the U.S. legally for 17 years..

Answer:
No it is not automatic. He needs to apply if he wishes to gain citizenship through the naturalization process. You can find most answers to questions you may have in the USCIS Guide to Naturalization available at http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/m-476...

You can also find lots of other resources and links on citizenship at http://www.familybasedimmigration.com/fo...
yes
oh no he gotta file for citizenship like every1else.
yes,you can
There is no automatic American citizenship by marriage. He has to qualify like everyone else.

You may apply for naturalization if:

You have been a lawful permanent resident for five years.

You have been a lawful permanent resident for three years, have been married to a US citizen for those three years, and continue to be married to that U.S. citizen.;

You are a lawful permanent resident child of United States citizen parents: or

You have qualifying military service.

Children under 18 may automatically become citizens when their parents naturalize. You may inquire at your local Immigration and Naturalization Service Center for further information.

The website below (I cannot vouch for it; however, there is some free info there) offers do-it-yourself citizenship packets.

Good luck.
His 17 years prior residency qualifies him to apply for citizenship straight away. The poster who offered the commercial website gave some good information, but it can all be had at www.uscis.gov for free.

Get the application in quick, before the fees go up.
He can apply for citizenship but it isn't automatic. I believe he needs to have been a "permanent resident alien" (first 2 years are temporary and don't count) for 5 years before he can apply.
USCIS has just raised application fees, unfortunately. Filing naturalization paperwork now costs $330!

yea he can became a u.s citizen if he marry's you and because you have a kid. he does need to file for citzenship like everyone elso but it will be much easier for him to get
No, you have to do it through the Immigration Dept.
yes.i know many people got married just to become a u.s. citizen
Nothing is granted automatically. He needs to fill forms, pay fines and wait like many other people. He is a permanent resident so he does not need you to become a citizen.
Yep, hopefully for love and not just for citizenship
