How long to become a US resident?
Answer:
First, a distinction for previous answerers: US resident is not equal to US citizen. If you're married or engaged to a US citizen, it is relatively easy to become a US resident (assuming your US spouse is not a felon, and you're not trying to defraud the US government).
If you're already married, then you need to apply for a spouse visa through the US Embassy in your country. This will allow you to legally enter the US. Also, your US spouse must submit an Affidavit of Support that shows he can support you financially. Once you are in the US, you need to file an "Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status." This probably will take 6 months (maybe more). This basically gets you your "green card." There are a lot of application fees associated with this (in the hundreds of dollars).

I think its 5 years.
It all depends on so many factors. Get yourselves a good immigration lawyer. And in the future, don't post your question on this section of Answers - there are a lot of immigrant bashers and haters that seem to love making people feel bad and making racist statements.
Illegal Mexican immigrant criminals become US residents the minute they slog up out of the Rio Grande. If the federal government won't do anything about them, you can consider yourself a resident as of right now.
depends do u have a green card/temporary residency already if not it could take up to 5-10 years, if you do it will take around 5yrs.
if you are here legally or plan on coming here legally, it usually takes around 9 months. IF you are not legal, most likely you will sit in a pile of papers for years. .. Once you become a resident, it takes 5 years before you can apply for US Citizenship.
You have to establish 7 years of good conduct in the states and then you have to get your official citizenship to be an official citizen. That is if you are on a green card.
You can do it on your own or hire a lawyer to get your Greencard. It takes several months up to 2 years.

Seeing that I just did this with my husband I can honestly say that it took us 3 years, a little over. It depends on the stats of your case, if the immigrating spouse has a criminal background or if they have illegally entered more than one time or not... my husband had not, and did not have a criminal background. The US Citizen spouse has to prove that they would be in extreme hardship if their spouse was not granted his/her residency. Get a good immigration lawyer that can help you through the process, even if you have to pay a pretty penny, it's worth it. The wait has been shorter for people applying now, so I would say just do it as soon as possible, who knows what could happen with our immigration laws... ;) I hope that helps!
well ashley it depends if when you first arrived to the states you went in with a visa or illegaly, if you went in with a visa it should take about 6-8 months in california, if you got there illegaly you will have to leave the states and file a waiver in ciudad juarez and the processing times are about 10-12 months, in which you will have to be out of the states, even in your spouse is a u.s citizen, hope i can help.
