Why don't California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas build their own border fences?

Clearly, these states would prefer the federal govt to do its job of protecting the borders but since the feds are unwilling to do it, then why don't the states do it themselves? After all, if the illegals are burdening the states so much, wouldn't putting up a double fence on the border make economic sense?

Note: If there's an issue with not being able to build directly on the border because of infringement on the fed's Constitutional power to control the border, then the states can just build the fence about a mile back or so.

Answer:
There is a treaty with Texas that that is for the feds. In CA, our representatives (Hunter, the one running for President) were behind the fence in San Diego that went up, where crime dropped so dramatically that there is now a Nieman Marcus backed up against the border fence. It is a very different neighborhood, entirely.

Also, unfortunately, as the corruption comes across the border with the drug cartels, there become free spending political interests that hamper the interest of a border town to put in a fence. That last is opinion, but it is based on a lot that I have seen and read, particularly regarding parts of Texas.
i live on the TeX/Mex border and love it...why don't the states who employ these illegals buy their own fence...they're just passing through here
It's a national problem. And further, an electric-pulsating fence might be better. We use that for cattle and wolves!
I thought there was a fence in California. I think the main entry point is through the New river, which is hard to build a fence on that river.
The first and most obvious reason (to me) would be the economic factor. Speaking as a New Mexico resident, our state doesn't have the money to build a fence, in the unlikely event the issue came up our elected officials would spend years debating it.

The second problem is, that many people in our state have ties to Mexico, regardless of how much they like to deny it, so there would be very little support for such a fence here.

On a separate note, a fence would be useless, as soon as it was built, someone would begin digging a tunnel under it, or damage or deystroy it. In short, it would cost more money to maintain it than it did to build it.
Because it's the federal government's fault for letting them all in and letting it escalate to this. Don't forget that the border states have volunteers securing the border 24/7. Illegals also effect life in northern states. You're forced to pay taxes and healthcare for them wherever you are in the U.S., so it's only fair that everybody chips in because illegals effect every U.S. citizen.
The state would have to buy the property rights from each land owner.
