Can you legally ask someone to see their green card/immigration papers?
I mean everyday citizens asking other individuals for proof of legality to stay in the states.
I ask this cause I see sites all the time about reporting illegal immigrants, their employers, their housers, and then the information will be given to proper authorities.
While I have absolutly nothing against getting illegal immigrants out of America (I'm very against illegal immigration even though I'm a liberal, but fully support legal immigrants as my parents were two, and they do so much for society), but at the same time, can see a scenario where some misguided racist Texan may go down to Home Depot, and start asking for the names of anyone with dark skin speaking anything other than English, and then go home and start falsly "reporting" them without proof.
Can you actually just walk up to someone based on racial judgements and ask to see green cards/papers, and if refused repor them
Answer:
No. A citizen has NO right to demand proof of citizenship status from a stranger on the street. Your "misguided racist Texan" has no authority, right, or provocation to demand identification from foreign looking folks in the parking lot.
If he tried it, anyone illegal would disappear to avoid trouble and anyone who was a legal Texas resident would tell him to "Go to hell. Who the *do you think you are?
If anyone walks up to YOU and demands that YOU show identification, tell them to go to hell (Unless they clearly identify themselves as being a law enforcement agent).
I don't think you can because of the privacy issues in this country.Hey, I misunderstood your question and I am sorry I overracted!.I understand now.People in the general public cannot go and ask people for status...That is harrassment...Sorry again!
I still have my old military "green card", but noone will ask me for ID, just my drivers license.
I believe the only time you can be asked for them, is if you are seeking employment. Either a SS card or legal residency papers are required. There are some places that you are required when you apply for apartment or house rental, but there have been a lot of court challenges on that one.
In L.A. a cop CAN NOT ask a suspect Illegal Alien IF they are an illegal. Even though voters passed the 287G or ICE Bill. So you can do what you want, but if you are an American citizen, "you have the right to remain silent". It's a bunch of crap!!

i don't think you can because of the privacy law. but, if they are illegal they have no rights. yes the sites that are posted on here are legit. as long as you say, i believe they are illegal, there will be no problem.
If someone out of no where demanded I show them my birth certificate, I would give them the middle finger.
Well, technically you ask whatever you want. :) Now, can you legally ask regular people...NO. You will either get your behind whooped, ignored, or sued etc. It is not a wise thing to do.
Sure thing.
May I see your green card/papers?
See?
I just asked.
I'm not seeing anything from here, though.
You must have told me to bug off.
