Im american but can i apply for dual citizenship if a grandparent is from portugal?
Answer:
You can but it will only be recognized by portugal, the US does not recognize dual citizenship.Gomanyes I didn't say the US wouldn't allow some one to be a US citizen as well as a foreign citizen I said the do not recognize anything but the US citizenship you buffoon, you the one that doesn't have a clue mook.
I think that each individual country has rules and regulations .I know that if you went to a foreign country to ask for citizenship after you are an American citizen , you officially asked to give up your American citizenship ,however , if you go to another country that automatically gives you citizenship...which very few do, you might and I say might be able to keep your citizenship.but not for sure...you must ask the American Embassy of that country the situation,
John D has no idea what he is talking about. The United States has no problem with dual citizenship. Whether or not you can do so will depend entirely on the laws of Portugal.
America does recognise dual citizenships inmost situations but your main problem is with portugese nationality. One of your parents would need to aquire nationality in order for you to do so. Portugal recognises only those with parents (not grand parents) with portugese nationality. I have included an English translation of their nationality law as my source, have a look for yourself.
