Do you think that people who live in America should speak english??

or should they keep talking their language??

Answer:
Of course they should. Why should we change to suit their needs?
speaking english shouldnt be a requirement.

we're a melting pot!!!
I feel they should speak English.
No!
if you lived in Russia wouldn't you speak Russian? It's no longer the melting pot, it's a salad unfortunately.
Yes speak English if you want live and work in America

history of Immigration
Germans, British, Irish, Italians, Russians, French, Finns, Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, Danes, Dutch, Austro-Hungarians, Chinese and countless more Nationalities everyone Assimilated into United States of America Culture and learnt English also all came here legal!!!
yes b/c if we lived in another country we would be expected to know thier language
Definitely! English is the last thing that unites us all.

Not everyone wants unity though. :(
english they come over illegally by just crossing and not paying taxes and basically free loading off of us the least the could do is learn to talk to us
Yes! I shouldn't have to act like I'm visiting another country every time I go or shop somewhere. They can talk however they want-but in public it should all be the same language.
It would be *useful* if they knew English, but if they never got the chance to learn, or their religion doesn't allow it, etc., then its fine.
they should keep there own language of course but they should have to learn english and use it when appropriate
If you live in America, you should be able to speak basic English. But I'm tired of Americans who go to other countries and expect those citizens to speak English to them.
absolutely!
you cant be a united country unless everybody can communicate with each other....we are one people and not separate tribes....
NO!!!!!I dont think they should have to because there are some people in this country who are "American" and still can not speak English so.......no
Yes, I have had this thought. If they want to live hear, they should learn english before coming.
No, not necessarily, but they should try to learn it over time.
And if you are an American you should already know that it takes time to learn a new language, right? Haven't you tried? If not, you should do so.
English should be the official language of the United States and everyone who lives here should be required to learn it and speak it.
Yes.
My first language is French and I would never assume to demand that a host Nation bend over backward to accommodate me nor change anything they were doing just because I decided to join.
If they are going to live here yes.
I think that when people come to live in our country, they should be required to learn English. At least a basic vocabulary. However I think that they should still be allowed to speak their native language.

Back in the first part of the century when most of our ancestors came to this country through Ellis Island, they had some knowledge of the English language. But they also were determined to learn the rest of it. They took pride in becoming American and wanted to learn the American language (English).

I think that if you want to live the American dream, you should be able to speak about it in the language that Americans speak.

Furthermore, when you visit another country you are expected to be able to speak the language of the country in which you are visiting.
Maybe all Americans should be required to learn two languages or more!
Just a thought.
I think they should know English, but also be allowed to speak their language.
I dont. This country was founded by many different nationalitys. For us to make a language requirement in this country is unfair. That would mean that the "Land of the free" isnt free at all.
They need to learn english period.
I wouldn't expect everyone that comes here to know English. Some come under dire straits (for example, Cubans seeking asylum), and don't have time to learn the language. Some come from countries where English education is non-existant, like in central Africa. Most Asian immigrants know little or no English when they come because Asian languages are so different in grammar and style (not to mention the use of characters instead of romanized letters). And since large enough populations of almost any nationality can be found in areas of our country (Southern California alone is home to large groups of Armenians, Cambodians, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Thai, and Vietnamese), an immigrant can literally live in the US without ever having to know English.

That said, the immigrants have no right to DEMAND that things be done in their language. If they want to communicate with someone of a different race who speaks a different foreign language (say a Mexican trying to speak to a Japanese), then the common denominator would be for both to use English. If they want to receive an education, there's only so much bilingual education that can go around. If they want to ever get out of their ethnic communities, they will need to learn English. But at the same time, I would never discourage people from keeping their native tongues and using them at home or amongst themselves.
Actually, I think we should all be made to speak the native language here in the US. Cherokee, Navaho, Algonquit, Apache, etc. etc. etc.
of course they should speak english, this is a weird question. it's the unifying language here, since we are a country made up of immigrants.
I think it should be. Think about it If I moved to Mexico I would have to learn Spanish right? if I move to France I have to learn French right? I think the US f----ed up when they didn't enforce English as the number one Language the reason why they didn't is because corporate America runs America and they like to use illegals because they can pay them less which means corporate America gets even more money they don't have to give an employee medical or dental etc. But they know if they do enforce English first in America that will force them to hire Americans and they know americans are going to form unions which mean they will have to include medical and dental and paid vacation and they don't want that. America is dying thanks to the government and corporate america then again corporate america is no doubt running this country.
People should be multilingual. Though it does help if we all speak English so we could communicate more efficiently.
yes
Yes I do, everyone living here should be able to not only speak English but also have a good command of spelling, grammar and punctuation. Unfortunately there are are a lot of users on MyTend born and raised here in the US that haven't accomplished that yet.
