This is actually a very good question.
The truthful but not very attractive answer is that the Spaniards, who conquered Mexico, didn't exterminate the majority of the native population.
The English, who later became Americans, did.
Therefore, America was empty, while Mexico still had millions of natives there.
The Europeans went to the place where they didn't have to worry about a native revolt or constant attacks.
Because according to you, all the SMART Europeans went to the US 100 years ago.

They did. They pretty much conquored all of latin America, including the Aztecs. They stole their gold and left.
In that sort of ancient history, the europeans werent looking to help the new world. They wanted to make themselves rich at any cost. It was up to mexico and its people/colonies to take the extra step if they wanted to make a strong economy.
Mexico failed... America won.

Mexico had an official policy that required all citizens be Roman Catholic, which meant you had to either be immigrating from another Catholic country or be willing to convert. All of the settlers who moved to Texas from the U.S. when it was part of Mexico still had to convert, although it was usually just a paper conversion. Anyway that's the main reason, otherwise Mexico was in many was just as advanced, and certainly richer than the U.S. (don't forget how much silcer and gold they had) up until the mid-19th Century.
Mexico has had a Marxist economy since the late 1920s when the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) first came to power. The one state-owned enterprise which works is Pemex, their gas and oil company. Even under the terms of NAFTA, that enterprise remains state-owned. The large estates which were broken up into farm land to be leased out to peasant farmers in the late 1920s have to be sold back into private hands. So, over 900 thousand peasant farmers no longer have a piece of land to turn a plow into.
They have two choices: 1. Carry out a revolution. 2. Go to "El Otro Lado" (the other side), i.e.: the U.S. They are choosing #2.
People of European stock did come to part of Mexico, beginning in 1821. Fifteen years later, they outnumbered the Mexicans in that part of Mexico. So, they fought an armed revolution to make themselves independent. The place is now called Texas!

Because they weren't that smart (meaning the Europeans) - (lol)! Uh oh. .I am of European ancestry. Good grief. .what a question!! Well- that's certainly food-for-thought. Who can say the way that history goes, for one can only wonder. We do have some American (United States) businesses in Mexico right now even- and there are a number of Americans that go to Mexico for many reasons to include vacationing there.
That's an interesting theory, they came here and educated us. Well, everyone added their bit, of course, but where do you put Edison, Ford, Bell, Salk, etc etc on your plan?
Why didn't you develop your own economy more if you wanted it developed? (And nationalization of foreign investment doesn't count.)

So the Spanish Europeans were the dumb ones who went to Mexico. I knew that. Today Spain is in debt, and this explains Mexico too. Like father, like son.
