A hundred years ago , they we're not as welcomed as you said. Second, the numbers were restricted, because they had to come here by boats and the cost is very expensive. Hundred years ago, we were actually technological equivalent compared to the Europeans. In fact , the English had to learn how to build a proper clipper from us in the 1800's.
Honey, things change. You can't hold on to the past forever just because you like it better. Back then America was different. We weren't a world superpower, or the best place in the universe to live. We needed to expand. Now we don't. Learn to let go of the past.

There have been laws on immigration since the beginning of the 1800's (200 yrs ago).
The laws were that immigrants could not have criminal backgrounds, had to be of good mental and physical health, had to be proven a non-alcoholic, had to have references of a good work history, and also had to have a lot of money to afford the ship to come over here.
Many more mexicans could come here LEGALLY if the illegals were sent back or made to go back. They may want to work, but they are disrespecting our laws along with disgracing their own people by cutting in front of them and making it hard for them to come here legally.
I don`t think we have an illegal immigration problem we have an illegal employer problem, someone gave these people the motivation to come here and it is the people hiring them. Shame on the corporations that put us in the position to tell these nice people they have to go home. Corporations will aways go as far as the rules let them and it is time to change the rules and put the fear of jail in them.
The fact remains that there are laws now. These laws were not created to specifically rule out Mexican immigration. That is ridiculous. Illegals must be punished.

There were immigration laws 100 years ago, and nobody was begging for immigrants. What there was was huge amounts of available land and not enough manpower.
Skip forward 100 years. The country grew up and filled up. There aren't vast tracks of land available for the taking and factories are FAR less labor intensive than they used to be.
And, yes.. people who head off to the US with the full intent of engaging in crime and stealing from the American taxpayer.. are not going to be very popular. We just don't like criminals much here.. deal with it.
Your facts are not correct. The world is a very different place with the atomic weapons and treats from all over the world coming here to do us harm. The illegals are virtual terrorist and could have the potential to harm your family and we could do nothing to locate an undocumented terrorist. It is a different world and security is important.
I do not understand. America was a prosperous nation back then like it is now.
The big question is why Americans care more about where someone is from instead of their work ethic and talents. I still believe in American values like hard work and pride; things I see in immigrants, but not in large segments of our population. I rather have hard working immigrants instead of Americans who are using our social services.
