On Thursday, the mayor testified before national leaders in Washington, D.C. on what he and his supporters call: the social impact of illegal immigration raids.
"Husbands, wives, children and grandparents were all in the throes of pain when they knew someone in their family was going to be taken away and they didn't know where that was going to be," said Greeley Council Member Pam Shaddock.
The councilwoman supported the mayor's efforts in calling for reform. In addition to hurting the families of the suspected illegal immigrants, Shaddock says the raids also hurt the local economy.
Last December, a crackdown on illegal immigration at the Swift & Company meatpacking facility in Greeley netted roughly 260 suspected illegal immigrants. Shaddock says some businesses have reported losses in tax revenue since the raid.
