I dont think the "government" is bound to the laws of the Bible... Christians are, however.
Because most of them are christians, and as everyone knows in the christian faith, one corner of the mouth is spouting all this nice flowery stuff, but the other side of the same mouth is trying to burn Jews for not believing what they want them to and saying it's the Jews' punishment for not believing. Even though God is the only one that has the right to say that.
