Do you need an American Visa- With an Irish Passport?

I understand British citizens need to apply for visas whilst traveling to the country, however i am unclear whether or not Irish citizens need to apply- How does the U.S check each individuals criminal record upon entry?

It depends on how long you intend on being here if only for a short time then you shouldnt need a visa but you can check with a travel agent they can tell you more
