Birthright citizenship act?

How many people support the new birthright citizenship act that is being brought before congress? It already has 57 co-sponsers And is aimed at Illegals born in the United states from gaining citzenship merely by just being born in the U.S.A.

Answer:
I support it. It better pass! It's about time. No more anchor babies!!

To the previous poster, it is true that it's easier for anchor babies to get welfare/entitlement programs but it's also true that illegals themselves get them too. I have a friend, a social worker for WIC and she told me that because there's so much paper work, they do not do background checks to make sure that applicants are American citizen or not. I used to work at a nonprofit service for disabled kids and worked with families including illegal aliens and their children (born in their own country) who received services paid for by the government. Although on application paper, it always says "Only for legal residents or American citizens", government services don't do background checks. There are so many loopholes in the system. As you know, our govt has a problem with ENFORCING our laws.
I do and most Americans do. Any politican that wants to go up in the polls should support it since immigration will be a top issue in 2008.
I think that they SHOULD NOT BE granted citizenship by living here. It gives mexicans more perogative to come to this country, by thinking they will get citizenship. But when they wont get it for having children, than they may not come here so much. I hope they dont let them get citizenship.

Do you have a website i can read more about this bill?
Oh.. I am so for that. I think it is absolutely ludicrous to give citizenship to a child of an illegal immigrant just because they were born here.

I live in Texas, and I am for one am tired of paying excessive school taxes to educate illegal immigrant children and children who should be illegal. However, I do believe that these children should be educated, but their education should not be free.
It's a simple bill. Not retroactive to anyone born before it's passed, it says

"Acknowledging the right of birthright citizenship established by section 1 of the 14th amendment to the Constitution, a person born in the United States shall be considered `subject to the jurisdiction' of the United States for purposes of subsection (a)(1) if the person is born in the United States of parents, one of whom is--

`(1) a citizen or national of the United States;

`(2) an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States whose residence is in the United States; or

`(3) an alien performing active service in the armed forces (as defined in section 101 of title 10, United States Code).'."

And it serves a useful purpose, since "subject to jurisdiction" has long been a point of contention.
I do believe I support this act, because this is one of the biggest ways immigrants have to abuse our government agencies, and push them to the point where they are no longer useful to the taxpayers that support them. America has legal channels from which to become a citizen; I can't even imagine being in a foreign country and giving birth and that automatically making my child a citizen of that country. As for those who actually PLAN to get into America by using this ploy, perhaps the new act will close the loophole that allows these people to abuse our nation and its resources.
This here alone would solve 80 percent of the "illegal immigration" problem. Why? Because the people receiving the benefits from the government are NOT illegals themselves, but their children (who are citizens if born here). Vist the goa.gov site to know more about it. Illegals by law (passed in 96) cannot receive welfare benefits including housing assistance or food stamps in ANY state...but if they have citizen children, they can apply for their children.
Deport the illegal parents and make them take their now legal baby with them unless they are willing to put the baby up for adoption.
I believe that at least one parent must be a Citizen.
I believe that any person who votes in the elections or takes part in the governing of another country forfiets his citizenship.
It would be about time. For once the USA is behind the rest of the world especially in terms of citizenship.
I support it but I am not sure it will answer the issue, until the Supreme Court upholds it. However, it may force the question to come up.
