I thought my boyfriend was Puerto Rican, but he is actually Guatemalan. What should I do?
Answer:
When my husband and I went to pick up our adopted son in Guatemala we discovered that the different latin countries do not like to be mistaken for each other.
I can't say that I blame them. I mean, if you think about it....Americans don't want to be called Canandian and Canadians don't want to be called Americans.
I had an exchange student from Japan stay with my family when I was in Middle School. My family went out to eat one day and saw an Asian family eating and talking. We asked our exchange student what they were saying. She was very offended because the other family was Chinese and NOT Japanese. She thought we should be able to tell the difference but we really couldn't.
Maybe you sounded disappointed when you stated that you thought he was Puerto Rican instead of Guatemalan. Maybe that hurt his feelings. Puerto Rico is quite a bit more "up to date" and established than Guatemala, so he may have taken your simple statement very personal.
Give him a chance to explain. Guatemala is a beautiful country!! And Guatemalans do come from Spanish decent as well.
Apologize? Talk it out with him.
What difference does it make if he's Puerto Rican or Guatemalan...???
I did not realize there was such racism between different latin cultures. Stop being racist both of you. How can we ever expect peace on this planet if you two can't even get over being Puerto Rican or Guatemalan.
leave him cause he stuip and cause he cused at you and if he fine give me his number okay good luck wit that
Your name serves you well --- that's what you really are.
Puerto Ricans don't resemble Guatemalans at all (who are mostly mestizo), and neither resemble Spanish people (as in people from Spain).
It shouldn't change anything.
Does it really matter ,what country he comes from ?
