How to emmigrate to Belize?
Answer:
I have to say that my experience is a bit different from the previous responder. My wife and I moved down to Belize from the States about two years ago with two kids (8 and 4). We have found it to be a great experience. We live in Belmopan and it is great not to worry about traffic jams, etc. - it is a quieter life which is what I wanted. In a little over a year we are already permanent residents and the way we went about it is probably best. We arrived on a tourist visa and arrived on a bus through Mexico so that we did not have to have a return ticket when we arrived (return tickets are necessary if you arrive in Belize on a plane). Within months we got a work permit to start a new business. Once we had the work permit we could stay in the country for the year that the work permit was valid. Once we were in the country for a year we applied for permanent residency and, after a bit of work, got the residency within 3-4 months.
That is about it. Belize can be a wonderful place to live if you find a place that meets your personality.
For Pete's sake, DONT! I'm from Britain, and yes, I know that Belize was run by Britain, but it's NOT a good place to go!
Belize is not the best example of an ex-British colony. The highlight of the week is when the cruise ships berth! Nice beaches, nice people, but not a good place to live!
First you should go for a long visit to see how you like it. We thought about moving there in 1992.Went for a visit and it was ok.You can't make any money down there unless you have your own bussiness. Some areas in Belize City were a bit scary for tourist. We were advised not to go out at night. We sat in our room for three nights. The people were very friendly the food was very bad in Belize City but that was years ago.Good luck.
