I agree on the swimming in part...it angers most of us that our immigrants are treated better than we are. Now, that's not to say that we don't want immigrants here, after all, if the majority of us tracked our genealogy, we'd find that our ancestors were mostly immigrants, but most of the middle class (at lest the ppl I know) think that the citizens are treated unfairly by our own government.
That said, I was born and raised here. Why does anyone love their own third world country? I can't fathom why anyone would stay in say...Ethiopia, but then I've never traveled there, and I wasn't born there, so who am I to say that it is a terrible place? I guess the answer to your question is that our families are here, and it's what we know and are comfortable with! :0)

Of course the U.S. doesn't have national guaranteed health insurance - but then again, European nations don't have to spend as much on National Defense.
Socialism is just another tool to keep the working class in their place and keep the ruling class in theirs. Luckily, most Americans have a fundamental distrust of government - that prevents European style social programs from taking root here.

You are very right that we Americans are totally ripped off by the wealthy in charge of our govt. The propaganda about socialism has cost us years of progress in social justice. However, the illegals do not have it better than we. So, that last comment makes it sound like you're an American conservative who has gotten us into this bind by supporting the uberclass as they worked against us.
What's gone wrong in America, apart from the nightmare of Bush's foreign policy (the worst, but really only on scale, given 1953 iran, the phillipines, yucca tan, etc etc etc), is that the "American dream" has now been violated.
Circuit City recently made it explicit - they fired their best workers and told us all they couldn't afford their best. the savings and loan scandal was a ripoff of billions 20 years ago (bush's involved then, too) and now we've got this adjustable rate mortgage fiasco that is stealing the home and wealth of millions of americans and trying to make them for greedy for it.
This country could have continued being so damn great. And then somebody shot JFK.
I've looked around. There is no other place I would rather live. Huge chunks of the rest of the world live in self-imposed poverty. Self-imposed because its caused by war or corrupt politics. I thank God every day the I live here.
America is GREAT, because it is America! I can say what I want, Do as I please, as long as I do it LEGALLY! I can live my life, serve my country, pay my taxes, and nobody messes with me. I can go all over the world, back my government, piss everybody off, then come home and be amassed that they don't like me! I can complain about how rough life is here, when I have a car, a roof over my head, a couple of good meals a day, employment, the right to worship anything, or anybody! I can read the paper, go on line, see what's happening all over the world, and still piss about how I'm treated here! I can lie, steal, and cheat, as long as I'm a politician, and nobody complains about it! Hell, I can even have relations, outside my marriage vows, with young government interns, on public time, in my public office, claim I didn't do it, on National TV, and nobody thinks it's wrong! It don't get no better than that!
With all the problems in this country it is still the best place on the planet.

Not a damn thing anymore. I'm a young American guy, and it seems pointless to be an American because I've witnessed my own community and government turn it's back on poverty in America. I go to college, work, pay bills and taxes. I'm beginning to believe that I'm nothing more but a number and $$$ producer for this corrupt government. I have nothing against illegals but they have it a lot better if they come to this country, no taxes and most likely amnesty. (But I can't speak for all illegals because some do pay taxes) I'm not mad at the illegals either, because it is OUR government who has betrayed us for the all mighty dollar! They export more jobs then they create! I've already decided what I'm going to do.. Save my money and moved out of this country.
