Question for Australians: Has Multiculturalism failed? is integration a better option for this country?
Answer:
Oh, for a perfect world! It would be nice wouldn't it? I attended one of the most multicultural universities in the country; Wollongong, and I can tell you that integration was a pipe dream.
Students were encouraged to speak their own language, most would only associate with people from their own country. It is a tribal thing, just look at Cabramatta with the Vietnames, the Jewish community in Bondi, the Lebanese in Green Valley and the list goes on.
I don't think integration is the answer, as it wont work. But we have multiculturalism to thank for great food, and that is about it.
Multiculturalism is a failure wherever it's practiced. It's an attempt by well-meaning, weak-minded, over-apologetic, social outsiders to help people who would be better left alone. It's usually espoused by people that don't really fit in with the rest of society, themselves, or by people who want to show how much they think of people that they think very little of. MC implies that people of other cultures are not capable of adapting, just like bilingualism in the States implies that people are not capable of learning English. It's a left-handed welcome.
Integration should always be the goal; it usually is for the foreigners. Anything else is segregation by another name. It means that we want foreigners to stay foreign, rather than become like everyone else. America, before political correctness, was a shining example of how integration works to the advantage of the minority culture.
Every wave of immigrant faced discrimination and exclusion, which forced them to assimilate. Now we have mayors, governors, business leaders, etc of every stripe. They have maintained their cultural identity by themselves, despite the prejudice they faced. Now we embrace them as a part of our national fabric. Everyone loves Italian food, German beer, St Patricks Day, and Cinco de Mayo. Ignored and left to their own devices, every culture will carve out its own niche and become just another face of the national identity. It is unnatural to expect one culture to adapt to those that enter it in the minority. It always causes backlash. Let the foreigners alone and they will find their own way.
Multiculturalism and integration must exist together, the trick is that each group must handle each or few things.
Group A can handle government, group B can handle economy, and so on.
Each group must be let to find their own place, there should be no attempt to equalize each group.
Let different groups integrate at their own pace and style.
Mulitcuturalism is great a long as it doenst include Arabs and asians, those two cultures are always set to fail, intergartion is a good idea but there are already drop kick cultures living in the country, they would just reproduce more of their kind with Australian visas to let more in through arranged marriges, id say its a loose loose situation
