Since when is this right?

It was just announced on my local news channel that our Gov. made an agreement with Mexico City to hire teachers for our local schools. The new teachers will be paid 8,000 more than "American" teachers and will be given a moving compensation package. Since when is this right? He, the Gov, claims that it will bring more Hispanic parents to conferences and boost the overall education of the Hispanic students. Utah already spends less per students than any other state, so why do we need to "import" our teachers? Does my son really have to pay the price? He is currently in a 90% hispanic school that uses dual immersion (half the class in Spanish, and the other half in English--covering the same material)? Isn't this breaking some national law?

Answer:
It isn't right. If teachers unions don't scream for discrimination, I'll be surprised. How does he plan to get them into the country? Paying them for moving expenses and paying them more than other teachers is just wrong.

What's this. 90% Hispanic school - in Utah? Wow. This is still the USA, where our national language is English. After reading Y!A for a month, I think we need to devote more resources and time to English. Why do our kids need to have another language forced onto them (dual-immersion) when the trend shows less and less English skills.

No, your son should not have to pay the price. Consider the affordability of private school. Other than that, support the "native" teachers when they strike, or seek employment / residence elsewhere.

I feel sorry for you, but keep fighting! Keep us posted too!
Good Luck ! :-)
And you still take VOTING for granted?
move somewhere else
There is nothing wrong with educating any kids.Do you want when your son grows up a bunch a gangs or educated working people.Complain about something else.
Your governor sucks
Probably not in Utah. They're not "Illegal" if they come here legally. He's giving them work visas and a healthy recruitment package to entice "the best and the brightest" Sounds like good corporate/public policy to me. Glad he's a Republican. Imagine what them darn Liberals would do.

"No Child Left Behind" is a carefully crafted law to slowly destroy public education. It is based on the fallacy that all children are grade redy after they leave 1st grade and no new [immigrant] children enter the system at any year.
Well, you got a first in Utah of the Governor pushing through the first school voucher program in the nation and what happened to that. Teachers union activists and politicians tied to education tried their best to kill that program before it really got going right?
I think nationwide the NEA and the state versions of it have been one of educations worst enemies.
So they cant get enough teachers. What they gonna do?
Since there are not enough teachers available in our country.

$9,000 more? That would be around a $49,000/year job, which is NOT much!
