I agree. Some people are very sensitive to the people who speak other languages living in America. But to declare English as the national language doesn't take anything away from those people. We can still appreciate that we're a country founded on many different cultures but there's nothing wrong with saying - yes, English is the national language. You're right - even when this young country was still growing and boatloads of Italian, French, Asian people came over.they ALL had to struggle to learn English but they did. The fact is, we were settled by the English - period. There's nothing politically incorrect about that - it's just history. So, I'm not sure why so many people get their panties in a wad over declaring English as our language.

(3 and 4)declare a national language? When our ancestors came over (5)became citizens they had to learn (6) english. So why do Americans have to see everything in (7) english and (8)spanish?
Good question. Basically because of the "pandora's box" the liberal left created called "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS". We need to get rid of political correctness. Then we need to elect politicians that have some big brass ones that will stand up for America and quit trying to avoid offending outsiders and stop offending AMERICA
A) Because the "powers that be" are either too lazy to deal with the matter and/or too worried about the "minority" voters to act in a manner that may affect their popularity with them.
B) Because not enough of us Americans actually take the initiative to tell the "powers that be" that we want something done about it. Most of us just gripe amongst ourselves, rather than stick our necks out and tell the politicians that we expect them to act or the manufacturers that we don't like seeing Spanish on products sold in America.

good question, americans do NOT need to learn spanish, nor any other language unless it can help them in business, and do you ever wonder why english speaking people who use cable television has to put up w several languages other then our own and we pay for that!! i want more english channels , not other ones
Talk English in public and for business. Talk whatever you want at home.
And we don't want to see everything in English AND Spanish, just English.

It would make sense, wouldn't it? I see a lot of people who say Europeans should have learned the native language, and while I agree with that, this is a whole different situation. We live in a day and age where time, money and resources are more important than ever. Not knowing English in America can cause social ineptness... this can hold up lines at government agencies (dmv, courthouse, etc) and at stores and pretty much anywhere communication is necessary. The other week I got a survey in the mail from the city with 2 sets of paper. One in English and one in Spanish. It required extra ink, extra work, extra paper... who pays for the government to function? The American people. What a waste of tax dollars. Aren't we already having environmental issues? That second survey was just a waste of a tree in my opinion.
If English was the official language in all states, then everyone in America would be required to know English (they can speak their native language at home, but not while doing business) This would help things run more smoothly, waste less tax dollars, and even help save the environment.
BECAUSE WE ALLOW IT. WE ARE GIVING OUR COUNTRY AWAY, BECAUSE NOBODY HAS THE TIME TO SCREAM OUT AND LET THEIR VOICES BE HEARD. YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING YOU SNOOZE YOU LOOSE. WAKE UP AMERICA!
It amazes ME how people refer to the past and I am not talking about yesterday past, I am talking about a few HUNDRED years ago past, lol. Actually it is more funny. The past is the past, we are living in the here and now press 1 for English and 2 to go home.
Yeah we should make the national language Spanish...see how your a** likes it!.If they say this is the land of opportunity for everyone that comes here.they are obviously not going to speak english right away.but most learn to speak english believe it or not some well, others not so well, but better than any american trying to learn spanish.
It shouldn't have to be declared. It should just be. But everytime I am in Home Depot and they have a sign at the register in Spanish I ask if they are giving discounts to people who speak Spanish.
It's ridiculous that we haven't declared English as a national language. Our government caters to the non-English speaking immigrants way too much. For instance, look at bilingual education. It only hinders learning. I went to school with the kids in bilingual education. If they were in bilingual education in the first grade, they were still in bilingual education in the 5th grade.
Americans speak English. Spanish is not the second language nor shall it ever be. I like language and I enjoy a challenge but no other language will do it like English!
