Should new US Immigration Laws be based on employers job&education merit preferences or family unit integrity?

I am particularily interested in responses from the family-value oriented Republicans and Democrats in favor of the merit system of determining immigration priorities.

Answer:
I think it is a matter of numbers, and due to illegal immigration, our numbers are too large for our schools and services to support, already. There are other ways to handle it, like in any legalization saying those legalized can bring no more than already here, ever, due to coming illegally. However, we also need people for jobs and shouldn't give control of who comes here to increasingly distant relatives from the original immigrant who want to come, over those our country needs. The switch to a nuclear family presence, with spouse and minor children getting preferences, is the one thing in the bill I agree with. We aren't the ones keeping them from their families, when they come, they leave them. We give them an opportunity and define their options. They choose.

The problem is that the REASON we are against illegal immigration is that it strains our resources, ruins education for our children and closes our hospitals. These issues should be the focus of any bill, but they are being ignored, and the current bill would make the situation far worse.

The bill is unfixable and should be killed.
If the bill doesn't pass then you should ask this question in 2010...nothing will happen till if this doesn't go through.
The bill won't pass, so there probably will be no new laws, besides we need to enforce the laws we have, nothing wrong with them other than they are not being enforced.
Your question is a little confusing. Are you talking about legals wishing to enter the country or illegals that should be deported.

Either way it should be merit preferences. If you are legally trying to enter the country and wish to keep the family intact then you must abide by our laws. The US government doesn't owe the world a citizenships + family.

If illegal. Lets play a hypothetical game. Lets say I and my wife are squatters in your house. You ask us to leave, but why should we, we are eating your food, reading you books, and not paying a dime. (Maybe we clean the bathroom becaue you and your wife hate to get you hands dirty. You could hire a cleaning service, but that might cost more) Before you know we have a child also living in your house. At this point you are becoming financially distressed because of my families added cost. (in the long run, cheaper to get the maid service) However, being born in your house, my child is now a part of your family. Will you throw me and my wife out on the street and seperate us from our child? Or you will continue to use your hard earned money on my family instead of your own?

We should not be conserning ourselves with seperating the families of illegals, we should instead listen to the words of Ross Perot and listen for that "Big Sucking Sound". The sucking of our tax dollars helping people who are ILLEGAL. The families should have to live with their consequences. Be seperated from family or move the whole pack back to the land you came from.
We HAVE laws now that are not enforced, why make more laws that won't be enforced? Family unit integrity has no business in any of our immigration laws.
We do not need any new immigration laws, just need to enforce the ones already in place.
But to answer your question any immigration law today should be based on what is best for the US citizens which would be more merit based but differently not employer based and immigrants should be much more economically affluent not just educated that gamete runs to wide. We have already saturated this country with poor uneducated immigrants but legal and illegal for the past 30 yrs.

Also, at present there a too many foreign companies in the US that only hire people from their country. Many even have brought them with them under the umbrella of manager when they are just basic educated people that could of been hired here by US citizens. Think about it.
Merit! If you choose to leave your country of origin, it doesn't mean you can bring the whole family with you. Education and job availibility should be a very important factor, after your character, your ability to be an asset to our nation is next. If you are given citizenship, you can always go back and visit your family!
