Jose Genao sells used cars for a living, but lately he's had to turn away customers from his Smyrna dealership.
Genao used to sell about 15 vehicles a week, mostly Ford F-150 or Silverado pickups to a Mexican clientele. Now he sells only two or three.
Half a dozen customers have returned cars because they can't register them.
"They bring the key and tell me, 'Jose, I'm leaving,' " Genao said.
Genao is feeling the fallout from a new state law, effective July 1, that requires a valid Georgia driver's license or ID card to register a car in Georgia.
The law is cutting deep into traffic for many auto dealers and tag and title services catering to the state's growing immigrant community. Illegal immigrants can't get driver's licenses because to do so, they must prove they're in the country legally.
The law also has the potential to cut into sales taxes and county ad valorem tax revenues, though metro area counties say it's too early to measure that effect.
The bill's sponsor, Sen. Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) said he did not target immigrants.
"Yes, this will impact people who are here illegally, but my biggest focus is public safety," he said.

I think that is a very valid and necessary law. The guy who said that they are dangerous isn't just talking to hear himself yammer. It's the truth. In my hometown, quite a few years back, a crowded van full of illegals went the wrong way down an interstate (more than likely because they could not read english). If i remember correctly, they killed themselves plus an oncoming vehicle.
to me illegal is illegal. if people can't register a car due to being illegal, then so be it.. if people are affected by this, then so be it.. This is the problem in this country. nobody wants to enforce the laws we have.. enough is enough.. we just need to enforce the laws we have in this country.
I guess, do it legal or get out.its one way to help stop the flow of illegals..now, put the dealers in jail too...make it a mandatory 20 years no parole for violating the law...that would work for all employers too...good luck
Problem with this is that in a lot of states, illegals CAN get a drivers license without any problem. I know from experience. NO< I'm not an illegal, my husband came to this country on a tourist visa from England and we decided to get married so he never went back. Before he became an official resident with an Alien ID card, he was able to get a drivers licence in TX without having to have anything but his visa and a letter from the Social Security Admin saying he didn't have a SSN.no problem. Though I don't know what would have happened if he had tried to register a vehicle because that never came up.
I truly feel sorry for the dealer but to me its a good thing,if your an illegal you have no right to have Dl or be able to register and hopfully it helps keep them from coming.
I think it's awesome. Simply put--make the illegals feel unwelcome so they move on to somewhere else. Too bad the rest of the country cannot learn from we Georgians.
We're sick and tired of illegals and are starting to do something about it.
Question is...is why are these people selling to KNOWN illegal immigrants in the first place? Cars have to be financed...so WHY ARE BANKS FINANCING ILLEGALS?

Well it's about time, but you know that the ACLU or LaRasist with challenge the law and it will be all for not. I read you also have a ssn to wed by federal law, but not all state check, if we just enforced the laws on the books we would be cutting down of illigals and amnesty would not be needed

If you don't have a driver's license you shouldn't be driving... because it is illegal. So why would the state then let someone register a car that they will be driving if they don't even have a license to drive? I work at a car dealership. If you are losing sales because of a law, then that is fine, it's the law. I don't understand why the article sides with the business owner. It does suck for him, but at the same time he should understand why the law is in place.
Edit: In response to other answers, you don't HAVE to finance a car. There are a lot of people that have enough money to get a car without dealing with banks. That is how the U.S. works. If you have the money to back yourself up you can get almost anything you want.
I'm at the front of the line when it comes to middle class people trying to earn a living and anytime someone loses income bothers me. But this includes losing jobs to outsourcing to other countries, as well as illegal workers taking american jobs.

Well, I think it is just going to make them have more people driving illegally. If you have a choice of making money for your family back home or getting a ticket, most would chose to take the ticket. Just have a different type of liscense that can be used if they register.

I think that's one of the best laws to come along in a long time. If they don't have a drivers license then they should not be able to register a car let alone drive it. If they are in the country illegally then they need to go home.

I think it is AWESOME.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is totally ignorant. Do you want illegals on the road? Do you want illegals driving with no insurance and then wrecking into you or your family? Do you want family members killed by these illegals and you get nothing in return? Do you want your cars, trucks, etc. destroyed by these illegals and then get nothing in return? Do you feel it is fair for citizens to have to have insurance and drivers licenses in order to get tags, but illegals are not having these requirements?
If you answered yes to any of that, you should be deported with them.
Driving is a privilege and is NOT a Right.
Illegal Aliens have NO business being in OUR country let alone driving illegally.
