What would you do if your kid was the only English speaking kid in her class?

This isn't a hypothetical situation. It truly is happening. I have been in classrooms and have seen it. The teacher was ESL as well and taught in the majority's language leaving these poor kids out. Not only that, but aren't they SUPPOSED to learn English in and American school? People wake up that isn't what is happening all over.
It isn't that the kids that speak English are getting ahead faster because the teachers are catering to the kids that don't speak English. It isn't about our kids learning a second language. They aren't TEACHING the second language - they teaching WITH the second language, NOT English. So in reality what is happening is that the English speaking kids are being left behind, not moving ahead faster and getting better grades.
About hoping for learning the second language through social interactions - that doesn't happen either. The kids that speak English only are left out of most everything. Leaving these children to fall behind not only in their studies but the social aspect of their education. Socialization is 50% of all learning, they just don't get that in these cases.
It truly was getting to the point with a few of the schools I worked in that I had to walk away. I had spoken up and talked with the teachers and even the parents. The parents felt the same way. I had to walk away from it. It was like since I was insisting on teaching My studies in nothing but English I was being racist. Sorry, I was working in an American school system. The level of frustration was immense. I could see the hurt and frustration int he eyes of these kids.
I would realize that I was living in a hypothetical world you created and quickly make my way back to reality.

I'd encourage her to pick up what she can from the other children -- she's at a great age for learning a foreign language, and it will be good for her. Some studies indicate that children who learn a second language early find it easier when they're older to learn additional languages.
I guess it would depend on what country it was. If it was here, I would be happy they were getting so much exposure to Spanish and would hope that they would pick up on some of it...if it were in another country where Spanish was the primary language I would do whatever I could to help them learn Spanish ASAP.
If English speaking was so important to me and I felt comfortable, i would either change schools or neighborhood. I would feel that I am either doing something wrong or feeling something wrong.
I find this VERY hard to believe.Even in the most Hispanic populated communities, this is NOT the case..I live in a community of over 80% Hispanic, and it isn't the case in my community..WHERE DO YOU LIVE?!?
My daughter was put into a class like that when, I believe, she was in the first grade. She wasn't challenged by the work and I felt it slowed her down. Faster to learn meanings in one language then to have to learn it in two. This should be done when children are in higher grades so it won't slow them down.

I'd leave my child in the class in hopes he/she acquires a second language through social interactions. Instruction is in English regardless of the number of students that speak another language.
I would move my child to a better school!!~ but if your there, it may not be financially feasible for you!-- I am sorry- this truly does suck- how alienated your child must feel, within America- this is truly rediculous!
Well that would all depend on what they were teaching.

I am sure that I would move to a better area to live. Not saying you should have to, but I would do so for the sake of my child. I am not against children learning another language but if this is in the USA, then the language that is not English should be the second language, not the first one. This should NOT be happening in the USA.
In a way it is good. Kid will learn Spanish without any effort. And she knows English since she speaks English at home. So she will know two languages without any effort.
I would be in another country so what is your point? As long as I live and have my Newark on the only language of choice will be English! See homie!
Why dont you rephrase your question to read " What would you do next year" - when you kid is the only English speaking kid in class.
If this happens outside of the US, there is nothing you can do about it.
If this happens inside of the US, there is nothing you can do about it.

I would volunteer in the classroom as much as I could. I would try to learn some Spanish so I could communicate with the children and their parents. I would continue to read every night with my child. I would appreciate this chance for my child to learn another language.

It is just about like this in some parts of AZ which is exactly why the state is ranked 49 in the nation as far as education.
I would use the school choice laws and open enrollment laws to make sure my daughter got a good education. Or I would move.
This is imposible to happen in the U.S, there could be some kids that only speak spanish in the class, but come on, not ALL of them..
It is coming to that. If we don't get some politicians who will actually do something about illegal immigration, some states will look like Mexico. Not good!

I would go to the school district offices and demand that they find a classroom for my child with english speaking children. If they refused, I would pull my child from public school and send him / her to a private school (which is what I am doing) or homeschool.
Fine. Don't get upset. First, demand that the education be provided for free and apply for a minority scholarship for the next 16 years of her life. Second, claim that any medical treatment required during the school year be provide at no charge. Third, stop paying income taxes. And finally, congratulate her for attaining the 'new' American dream.
