I'll try to answer. I think you're talking about security right? Well you have to supply a plethora of Identification to obtain a U.S passport including but not limited to S.S card, photo id, and birth certificate. Also, to leave the country you need to obtain a visa from the country you are heading(some countries perform security checks). I think every American should have a passport just to have another proof of id and citizenship.
