When asking Immigrants to assimilate what do you really mean?

Please provide specifics, not just follow our customs and beliefs. Please be specific about what you mean by that.

Answer:
If they come from a country where their native language is different- Learn English. People being proud of their culture, flying the flags of their home country, etc., don't bother me. I just want them to be able to communicate effectively. I see no need for people from other cultures to completely embrace ours.

For example, my next door neighbors are from England. I don't expect them to completely Americanize, start driving big Ford trucks, and blasting country music on the weekends.

My other neighbors are from India. I don't expect them to break their backs fitting in with our society. The whole idea our country was founded on was to celebrate our diversity, not homogenize it.
Live by our laws.

Not demand special treatment.

ADDITION: Curious. For the thumbs downer, which part did you object to, obeying the laws, or not demanding special treatment?

eat Mcdonalds, live between the telly and the PC and obliviously enjoy living off of the work and resources of thirdworlders.

. and vote against new immigration. Just ask all the prior immigrants who today act high and mighty.
Work to speak English, Put this country first above all others, work to fit into the community, follow our laws. If they wish to celebrate their culture in their home, they are welcome to do that. Do not whine for us to change for them. that's what I mean by assimilation.
Speaking our language is a good start, even if you do not like it we do speak English. Immigrants should be allowed to hang on to their heritage and embrace our customs and beliefs at the same time, why come to the US if you do not want to be part of us?

Do not disrespect our people or customs even if you do not want to partake, obey and respect our laws. Immigrants took a lot of time and expense to come here (legally that is) why would you not want to assimilate into our way of life, after all would you spend that amount of time and expense just to thumb your nose at the American people?
First and foremost swear allegiance to the USA, hold her and her flag above all others. This country operates on it's own brand of English, learn it speak it. you are now part of something that people from all over the world want, embrace it . You are not Mex-American, Irish American, African American or bumf*** from Egypt American. You are a citizen of a great country that for better or worse is now your home.
exactly why we need this new reform to see who is here to help and who is here to hinder the economy but then u have people who only want to focuse on the bad things about it and those are the people who will never get anything done about this
When in Rome do as the Romans do. When in America do as the Americans do, it's the law.
press 2 for spanish

i say...learn spanish you lazy white people.
Speak English, Obey all laws, Become part of this country, and leave your old homeland behind. Cast your old homeland off like a snake skin. Otherwise stay where you are.
1. Learn to read and speak English. We would not move to a non-English speaking country without learning the native language, and we are HIGHLY offended by people who come here and don't think it's important to learn ours.
2. Learn and abide by our laws.
3. Don't try to shove your customs and beliefs down our throats. You're welcome to them in the privacy of your own home, your own business (and by that I mean one that you actually own), or place of worship, as we are in ours.
4. Don't expect special treatment. We don't, and we expect you not to either.
5. Get a job. Don't expect to live off the welfare train. It will run out eventually at the rate we're going.
When asking immigrants to "assimilate" I mean that they should be required to learn to read and write - in any language. They should be required to learn the history of the United States, learn the Constitution and learn the Bill of Rights. Whether they want to speak Spanish, Spanglish, trash, or Mexican is their choice, but after wards they should understand and feel no qualms about rejecting illegal immigrants from causing a chaotic economic effect that will ultimately result in the U.S. turning out to be exactly like the country they migrated from. There will be no better life in the U.S.
I can look up the word in the dictionary, but would prefer to use a more informal approach.

When expecting immigrants to assimilate, change the scene by transferring this to another country...

if I were to sneak into Italy, I would not demand Italians speak English, print all their manuals in English, give me free food, health care, and expect the Italians to pay to educate my 6 kids while collect money from the Italian government in the form of welfare while I clean houses on the side. And proudly fly my American flag at such stupid Italian people.

Substitute this behavior ANYWHERE else, like China or Brazil. WHY risk your life to come to a country where you hate its people but want its hand-outs?
Here's an example of what I mean.

My grandfather comes over with his family, with a 3rd grade education and unable to speak a word of English. He goes to work, learns English, and is very proud to become an American citizen. He loves and supports his new country. He does not let his children speak anything other than English in his house, as they are now Americans.

Is that specific enough?
We mean to follow our laws, pay taxes, to apply for citizenship, teach themselves and their children to speak English, quit asking for handouts, pay their hospital bills, get car insurance to drive legally and a driver's license, don't allow yourself or your children to be in gangs, learn what respect for other people's property means, and we mean love it or leave it, be responsible for your own progeny, honor our flag and our nation, and quit sheltering illegals, pay child support for your offspring, don't litter up our nation and just be a decent human being. Is that too much to ask? I'm sure there are a whole lot more but for now, I'm done being specific. It's actually just common sense and courtesy with a little bit of good manners thrown in. Is that what you meant?
1. Come in LEGALLY.
2. Learn the language spoken in This Country.
3. Stay off welfare and pay for their own health care.
4 Study and become citizens.
5. Maintain gainful employment and pay into the system.

Simple really, but if they bypass #1...Get Out!
Let me first say that I am NOT asking migrants to “assimilate” to any country they migrate to. They should be smart enough to know better, if not, they need not be there. If I migrated to Australia, you can damn sure bet I’d be sayin’ “G’day mate” as appose to “howdy”.

If I asked myself to “assimilate” due to my migration to any country, I would ask myself to:

1.Embrace the country I have just adopted as my own
2.Learn to communicate with the inhabitances of my wonderful new home
3.Not work for less than a fair wage, as I would only be cutting my own neck in the long run (Because if I’m there, I’m there for the long haul)
4.Never demand more of the rights provided to the great people of my new home - for myself
5.To socialize with the inhabitances of my new home, so that I not only better understand them, but so that they can better understand me
When told to dark-skinned immigrants, it means they should make themselves as invisible as possible and take whatever abuse is directed their way without complaining.
Speak the language.

Don't fly a foreign flag, if you love your previous country so much.. go back.

Don't come here and demand to be allowed to wear a turbon or a mask in normal activities, that's not how things are done here. And you chose to come here knowing it.

Do not try to get us to change our ways to meet your approval, suck it up and change yours. You came here, we didn't go there.
I mean they should move into our society and live by the established rules of our society.
They shoul not come here and immediately try to change our society to become the same as their society.
If that is what they want, why did they come here?
If it was ONLY for more opportunity, then they should stay home and change THEIR corrupt governments to allow them to have the OPPORTUNITY they desire.
You must know how the country is multicultered,English primary language but there are many languages here.Assimilate means to try to learn the laws of the land, obey them as well. The hard part is to do it.Seek out people that speak your lingo.I have been around the world and where i have been,I have been asked to assimilate at every port of call, hence I know how you feel. The term assimilate does not say you cant keep heritage, your ethics nor the way you think. All you have to do is keep the peace and obey laws, not to bear arms against country in question.I hope Ive given you an insight to the true meaning of assimilate
First, they must SPEAK ENGLISH
Learn english and speak it. Save spanish for home and family.
Leave your mexican flag south of the border. Come here legally or not at all. Stop demanding spanish speaking schools and government officials.

That about sums it up
Just do what every other ethnic group did when they got here. If you can't figure that out after everyone else has (without the help of MyTend.com I might add) then we can't help you. Personally I don't care if you ever assimilate, your just condemning your children to the same desperate life you have now. If that's your goal, to produce generation after generation of gardeners, then you don't have to do squat. Assimilation is hard, if you won't do it for yourselves, do it for your kids.
Just stop hating americans.

Stop doing piss and "caca" on the streets.

Stop playing so loud that stupid music you call "grupera". Respect others right to live quite and in peace.

Do not ignore 4th of July celebration anymore. The american flag is under which you cover to claim "rights, jobs, education and medical care' IN THE USA. In that aspect the mexican flag failed you.

Speak English. If your IQ is so low that you can learned it, at least let us know.It will be better than hear you saying "I don't have to speat English, I'm mexican".

Do not make cause with those who envy this wonderful country and do anything they can to destroy it, not because is a bad country (In fact is hundreds times better than Mexico) but because is the richest, kindest and more powerful one on Earth.

That's my opinion. I'm not american born., but I'll never forget that this country gave me everithing that my own (Cuba) never gave me: Freedom, education and rights.
Respect and obey our laws, do not demand that our laws change to suit you. respect our customs, speak the language of the area around you (if you live in an English speaking community, don't demand that everyone else learn your language to speak to you.) Don't fly the American flag under the flag of your homeland.
