What, if anything, is being done about illegals that are being employed?
I think that these should be given some sort of legal status, because they are needed, but for anyone else, aren't employers supposed to get proof of ability to work in this country? SS cards, Green cards, visas.. Are employers being held accountable to that? Are we tracking under the table jobs in any way? The illegals wouldn't be here if someone wasn't hiring them right?
Answer:
Pursuing those who hire illegal aliens is the aspect most obviously missing from the new bill being pushed through Congress.
Why?
The people who want cheap "slave" labor are also the same people promoting the new bill and they have many politicians in their back pockets.
History is a great teacher.
The Eisenhower administration took action against illegal immigrants with great success.
The lowest incidence of illegal immigration followed and lasted until the Johnson administration changed the policy.
What did the Eisenhower administration do?
They arrested, fined and jailed a few of those who were hiring the illegals.
Once the seriousness of his actions was known, the jobs dried up. No deportation expenses were required.
Since the cost of living in the U.S. is higher, the illegals found their own way back home.
Isn't history great?
Employers paying illegals under the table couldn't care less about citizenship status. They just want the work done for the lowest possible price. This is why Americans aren't doing the jobs the illegals have took over. The illegal work force has driven down wages.
Grow up. The job shortage in this country is not at places like McDonald's and Home Depot, it's in professional situations that require extensive education. I'm not trying to stereotype, but most Mexicans who enter this country illegally do not fall into this category--they are unskilled labor, and there is really no shortage of jobs for them. That's why they continue to enter the country: to get a job that they are qualified for and be able to provide for their families. Don't worry, they're not out to get you. They just want a chance at a better life.
Yes, employers ARE supposed to have a number of documents when hiring an employee.
There is absolutely no way an employer can not know that they have hired an illegal. The first time you turn in your 941's on someone and the name or any of the information is not correct they will send it back for corrections (with late fee's and penalties).
It is a choice made by employers and nothing is being done about it, that's why penalties and fines have to be greatly increased in order to stop the situation where it counts, the one who pays the wage.

That’s the law regarding this. Special work visas are provided for agricultural labor. One of the problems is that many of the people illegally crossing the border are not aware of our laws. They don’t know that they can cross legally to work in agriculture. They also don’t know that they have certain rights and protections when they do cross legally. So they cross illegally and work cheaper then they have to because they didn’t bother to check or ask us.
The agricultural employers are sometimes guilty of taking advantage of them to pay less. Also sometimes they do know our laws but cross illegally because they cannot pass the background check we require of those seeking a visa.
We have laws. Part of our problem is enforcement and part is the huge number of illegal aliens that overwhelm our ability to enforce.
The so called "illegals" work force is NOT driving down wages. Wages for fruit/vegetable pickers was NEVER high, as farmers cannot afford to pay high wages, and our grocery market wouldn't tolerate the increased prices. The market would just seek cheaper imports, putting American farmers out of business.
Meanwhile, our large corporations (especially tech), whose board members seek only to increase the profits they stuff in their own pockets, as well as bloat their bonuses, are outsourcing once high-paying jobs to countries such as India. College educations in our country mean increasingly less, and garner employment for a decreasing pay scale, as cost of living increases skyrocket.
America is not the inviting land of opportunity it once was. Lobbyists buy-out our politicians in order to favor corporate interests at the expense of, and no benefit to,our nation's people. Just think about the words on the Statue of Liberty; kind of ironic these days, no?
We are lied to every day about the state of our union, and the financial status of the average American. We are manipulated and deflected from the reality of our situation by our politicians and much of our media.
We blamed Iraq for 9-11 when they had NOTHING to do with it, and now we blame Mexicans for a problem of our own making. A simple Yahoo! search for the "NAFTA Superhighway" will show you just how ironic - and misleading - all this anti-Mexican rhetoric is.
While our borders remain wide open, we INSTIGATE terrorists in the Middle East. While this administration claims terrorists want to take away our freedom and liberty, they fail to mention that freedom and liberty are GOVERNMENT-granted, no terrorist can affect them, and our own government has reduced them, all while illegally spying on US.
We listen too much, and think too little.
Wake up, America. Our own government is quickly becoming our worst nightmare.
The answer to the first part: What's being done is declaring the aliens are no longer illegal.
For me, I would rather have the Mexicans move next door. They're polite, God fearing people with a work ethic and strong family values.
