How can we be a UNION when we can't communicate with a quarter of the people in the USA?

What happens in an emergency? Why should they depend on the SCHOOL system to deal with kids who can't even speak a lick of English?

What about the UNITY which English brings to the USA? A country can NOT withstand being multi-lingual! Through out time this has been proven time and time again!

Answer:
Let me begin by stating that this is NOT intended to be anti-Hispanic or anti-anything else. Just my opinion on this item. If I have offended anyone, you have my sincere apologies. Here goes...
We can't communicate with one forth of our citizens because we let them get away with not learning to speak the Official Language of The United States of America, that being English. I personally take umbrage at the fact that Spanish is being crammed into the heads of ALL of our children everytime they watch shows like Dora, Diego and Handy Manny. Which is a shame, because other than that, they are all very fine shows with much to offer.
I agree.

It's time for the ENGlish to go back to ENGland.

America belongs to Amerindians.
Is called UNION because we are smart enough to know that we have one language and the ability to speak many.

Because we have one language and the FREEDOM to speak many.

Because we have one language and the Army to defend our freedom of speech.

Because we fought communism and we DO NOT HAVE A MANDATORY language.

Does it make sense now?
In other words, its your way or the highway, in the name of unity? You don't seem to want to have any compromise in your version of unity. You also seem to want very specific people to be able to be a part of this unity. Also, I don't think you can claim that multi-lingual countries have been proven "time and time again" not to work. Especially since like every successful country in the word is at some stage of being multi-lingual. The US was very multi-lingual, which is what allowed English to start here in the first place. Or do you think English has always been here?
Not to mention the costs.

ESL is in every school now. Millions in tax dollars just for that.

Every government form needs to be written in multiple languages - paid for by the taxpayers not the illegals.

Interpreters for every language seem to be the norm - let them pay for it themselves instead of the taxpayers and the immigrants will have no problem learning english.

I think that we should support other languages but we shouldn't as taxpayers have to foot the bill for it. If you know 20 languages then you are probably very smart and would probably be a great citizen, but you should know english too.
Actually, most countries in the world have populations that fluently speak more than one language. Most of europe, asia and africa. A lot of S. America also know their native language (spanish) and english too.
Don't you think that it would be easier if you were to learn spanish, instead of the immigrants having to learn english.
There has never been a rule saying that you must know english to enter this country. So you might want to either get that rule changed, or take it upon yourself to learn another language.
I agree with you. Unfortunately, we have a govt which could care less about sealing off the border with Mexico. Until we do that, the language problem will get worse.
Here is a little fact to ponder. Call any flight school or search the FAA website on the requirements to become a licensed pilot. One of the requirements is to speak and understand English. This is not just for commercial licensing requirements in the US this is the requirement to become a licensed pilot anywhere in the world. In aviation English is considered the PRIMARY language. If you can't speak it you will not be granted the license require to pilot an aircraft. Fly anywhere in the world and guess what primary language ALL air traffic control facilities use? English. Russian airspace...English.South American airspace...English.China... list is endless. This is because throughout the entire world the primary language is English. All the pilots that fly for mexian airlines such as mexicana...guess what they all speak English and speak it very well cause they have to in order to survive and prosper in their choosen career.

And to I've become so numb. To answer your first point how do they pass class without speaking English? That's easy.they have been forced to hire teachers or teachers aides that speak spanish. My source? My mother who retired after 29 years in the school system as an admistrator. Her very last PTA meeting was conducted ENTIRELY in spanish. This a school in the US being forced to conduct meetings in spanish cause others refuse to learn English and demand we bend to their will.
1. If they are in school they can speak English. How else would they pass the grade?
2. multi lingual is a good thing. Everyone should be able to speak other languages. Just think how much more you could understand other cultures and their languages...OPEN your MIND...It wouldn't be a bad thing! This is a free country! Freedom of religion, speech etc.. I think everyone should get over it and focus on really bad things like terror...Mexicans (just to name one culture) are no TERROR threat to us...
If we can't communicate with lots of people in America, who is at fault? It sure isn't the American citizens that speak the language that has been spoken here for over 200 years!
When my family came over here my grandfather wouldn't allow Italian to be spoken in the house. That's how important it was to him. He didn't leave everything he knew behind just so he could be an outsider here. He had a tough life, but his kids had good lives, and his grand kids most of whom never met him, have great lives. That's why we need a common language. we can all by bilingual if we want, but one of them should be English. If not, they'll be left behind and if they can't understand English in the event of an emergency, that's on them. I don't see many people helping them out while running away no matter how liberal they are.
