Can I become a UK citizen if I am a US citizen?
Answer:
The short answer is no. If you want citizenship you would have to live there. You could conceivably retain your US citizenship if you do that, but you might be given a hard time renewing your passport.
I'm curious, why would you want UK citizenship if you do not plan to live there?
EDIT: The USA does not recognize dual citizenship. It does tolerate it in situations where accidents of birth require it. However, if you take UK citizenship, it is likely that you would be refused renewal of a US Passport, under current policy. The rules have been relaxed in the last few years, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they will be different if and when you move to the UK. However, anyone who states that you would be able to acquire UK citizenship without any difficulty to your US situation is giving dangerous advice.
Yes, it's called dual citizenship. I think there is something to do with the taxes one pays. Some countries forgive an income tax and others don't. I don't know about Britain.
As a spouse of a UK national, you would need to live in the UK for 3 years to be eligible for naturalization. This is reduced from the normal 5 years.
