Will amnesty depress wages?

Todays article in Time says Globalization has already done that.

Answer:
Yes, but they will not be depressed any more than if there was no Amnesty. The people are already here, if you legalize them, there won't be more people (they are already here), so wages won't change too much.

The problem is that the nation has become so polarized that there are people on both sides of the aisle that will not compromise. The bill that got killed in the Senate was in my opinion a perfect compromise, but as usual, partisan bickering killed it. Now the border will remain open, and illegals will continue to pour in (depressing wages) while the congress goes on vacation, and as usual does NOTHING.
No, wages got depressed when started shipping factories overseas.
Yes.
You betcha, wouldn't it be cute to see a flood of white collar immigrants flood the market and let the other half have a taste.
Yes, amnesty will depress wages. Time is just trying to justify giving amnesty by basically giving a "who cares, it's already happening" campaign.
Yes, it will. Why do you think the sell outs in Washington (Democrat and Republican alike) want the Amnesty?

Naysayer...that is EXACTLY what is happening! The amnesty bill wants MORE white collar tech job visas to be included...that means there will be the depressing of wages in THOSE fields! They are ALSO attacking the medical sector!
No, it will not.
It has driven down wages in a number of areas, and it continues to apply downward pressure on laborers from our own talent pool who can actually spoeak the language and likely have some level of immunizations and education. Shamnesty will depress wages, drive up taxes on the middle class-dems call us rich-and to really pop your eyes open go to the Heritage Foundation web site and take a look at the actual cost of each man woman and child here illegally. Ask the business owners if they will pick up tyhe tab for the health and welfare services they must have and they will turn ash white with fear. They want you and me to pick up the bill and if we dont rise up in numbers they will do it to you and me, and make a mockery of our citizenship, as well as what it means to be an american. Their logic is to let them all have a pass on the illegal stuff, and someday they might make good citizens. Nope. Never going to happen.
Without a doubt it will. If you owned a company that employeed 10,000 people would you rather pay those workers $16 per hour or hire immigrants that will work for $10 per hour? That is why the president and senators are working so hard to pass this bill...pushing from large corporations that want to make that extra profit.
The workers being granted amnesty largely work in minimum-wage jobs, and minimum wage is set by the govornment. So unless washington lowers MW, real wages should be largely unaffected. However, businesses will not benefit like the article says, because along with amnesty is sure to come a crackdown on illegal labor, and that will sharply increase businesses' labor costs.
sure it will. The undocumented workers now are getting 3-4 an hour. Any big company is willing to pay that over 6-7 an hour. If these undocs. get amnesty they will work for minimum wage driving down wages for quailified people. And also, a lot of Americans, excluding the undocs., are use to working for higher than minimum wge, we don't want to work the base minimum. Americans also, are independent. We don't rely on 15 of our family members to shack up with us to help pay bills.
Yes, it already has. An example would be how home depot used to pay knowledegable people $12+, then they changed their business model, they now pay no nothings $8-. Haven't you noticed how you now get no customer service in those places? I remember when you went into one of those stores and the associates would go out of their way to assist you. now you go in and they run from you if you look like you need help. This is because in the southern states, the hispanic population has exploded and the depot changed their business model to go along with the non english speakers. A person who does not speak spanish doesn't stand an ice cubes chance in hell of getting hired there now. THe wages are lower because the employees are willing to work for a lot less, and therefore, the customer service is non existant.
Time is correct.Illegal immigrants are the smaller of 2 problems.Out sourcing is a major contributor to depressed wages. We are being sold as a country and are too blind to see it.Most media sources make a big issue of illegal immigration to sell papers or for viewer ratings.Public outcries and all that.Globalization is also the reason people have to press 1 for English not the Spanish speaking people of the States.
Absolutely!

Studies have already shown that even IF our elected officials implement the enforcement policies from this bill this time (fat chance) that illegal immigration will only slow by about 25%.

We need to take away ALL of the incentives first, then illegals will leave on their own.

Once these criminals are granted amnesty from our immigration, tax, ID theft and other laws, they will demand more money. In turn businesses will take advantage of the HUGE increases in workers visas and we will be at square one in regards to wages and border enforcement, but illegals will be getting taxpayers supported EVERYTHING!

Vote out all politicians who support amnesty!
Nothing wrong with competing on a global scale with other people, if you're competent in your job.

Only inefficient, incompetent people want state protection.
Yes! People would make even less money. The more people looking for jobs the less the employer is going to have to pay.
it already has; 20-25% of jobs in America pay at or near the minimum wage; where you been hiding?, this influx of 12-20 million and counting of illegal aliens puts tremendous downward pressure on labor costs; there are literally millions of Americans who must work multiple low wage jobs to make ends meet and small businesses just love it; watch and see the response to this comment if there are people in this situation who read this; this downward pressure on wages is the biggest travesty placed upon silent but hard-working Americans who have no support from the GD politicians
nah i dont think so!
No, because they're already here. Assuming we seal the border, give amnesty, and additional jobs aren't sent overseas, then anyone who was previously here illegally and receiving less than the minimum wage would get a 'raise' up to the minimum wage. Assuming employers are willing to pay some sort of premium for people who speak English fluently, then Americans will get a raise too. Of course, if rising wages in America cause employers to outsource even more jobs, then granting amnesty can actually depress wages because there will be even fewer jobs left here in America.
