My friend is illegal. He came here when he was a baby. Now he's 26. Should he have to go back to Mexico?
Is my friend an American, or is he a Mexican?
I'm just posing this situation to let many of the anti-illegal peope to realize that MANY people fall into my friend's situation. What do you suggest we should do about people in his situation?
BTW - I am for building a border wall and halting all illegal immigration.
Answer:
For all you "uninformed" people here, you can pay taxes with an "itin" number that you get from the IRS. I say he should stay here, afterall he wasn't asked for his opinion when his parents brought him here.
He's american!
I would love to see you prove he has paid taxes. Sales tax doesn't count. As for building the wall, I agree with you. But the fact is, he is illegal. When I got arrested for breaking the law, I plead guilty and paid the responsibility. I expect the same from them. And 26 years is a long time to live on the run. Why hasn't he tried to become legal?
YES
Blame his family, for making him a lifelong criminal.
Enforce the law, and many fewer children will be abused by their parents like this.
If I steal from you, and spend the money on toys for my kids, is it YOUR fault that the money has to be paid back?
God, I am so sick of these sob stories. America wasn't built on them. But it might be destroyed by them.
PS what he "considers himself" is irrelevant. I might consider myself exempted from compliance with tax laws (as your friend apparently considers himself exempt from immigration laws), but I don't think the government will agree - even if I claim it is bigoted not to do so. All the sophistry in the world will not change the FACT of his legal citizenship.
My COMPASSION lies with the hardworking Americans (and LEGAL immigrants) who obey the laws and should not have this bill rammed down their throats. People who are sick of millions of trespassers telling us what language to speak, demanding social services WE fund, and claiming that parts of America are really THEIR country. And doubly sick of politicians who treat us like we don't matter, in our own country. Last time I looked, it's still ours. For a few more days, anyway - until our masters in DC tell us to go to blazes.
With all due respect, where is your compassion for THEM?
I hope something much more reasonable can be worked out. But right now people are angry - very angry - about what is being done to us.
yes
He's been here 26 years and was too lazy in all that time to become a legal citizen. That should answer your question.
how does your friend attend school w/o a social security #?You can't do that in my state.
He must go back and start over like the rest of our ancestors did.
YES SEND THAT B*STARD BACK TO MEXICO GET HIM OUTTA HERE
How did he pay taxes without a social security number?
Yes, he should be boxed up and shipped out. it may not have been his fault he was brought here by his felon parents, but he is an adult and knows that he should become legal if he wants to stay. Pay taxes, do everything that legal Americans do.
PS. And if he doesn't have a SSN he CAN'T be paying taxes, hence he is a felon. He is working at a restaurant, so what. He is probably getting paid under the table.
" A country he hasn't even been to himself, which he has no ties to other than his parents and relatives?"
Well that would mean that his "relatives" are illegally here too...when they ALL go back...he will still have his family there.
I'm proud of my grandparents on my mother's side and great grandparents on my dad's side coming her, getting their greencards and working their butts off to get their citizenship. He's been here LONG ENOUGH to have become a citizen! if he wants to stay here help him get the citizenship. It doesn't seem to mean as much as it did to the older generation immigrants.
If he was born in Mexico then he is a mexican. If he hasn't gone through the proper channels to become a LEGAL citizen then he should be deported with all the rest.
why is there a border...?... racism and borders and all this crap is so stupid. I think no one should mess with him because it's not his fault and this is what he knows.
I feel he is a Mexican American and should stay.
well i mean as long as he does not take advantige of our tax payers money then maybe he should stay. and with him being american or mexican i'd say american he got his education here he is practically an american cit.
yes return to mexico
and reapply for legal visa
an illegal person would not have paid taxes
as would not have the usa version of the uk ni number
If he's paying taxes, I don't think he's illegal. Does he have a work visa or a greencard? Since he's been here so long and he does pay taxes, I don't think he should have to go back to Mexico but he should become a citizen. He is Mexican-American.
Since he was born in Mexico-he is Mexican...unless he came through the front door, he should be required to do so.
Let them stay..after all like you said he has NO ties to Mexico and hasnt even been there.
He would have a hell of a time trying to adjust to that life and more than likely would come back.illegal again of course but he would come back.
Your friend came over when he was a baby. It wasn't his choice, so I wouldn't consider him 'illegal'. Calling an immigrant 'illegal' has the connotation that they were aware they did something not legal, which of course, a baby can't do.
I would consider your friend to be an American. He may call himself a Mexican-American to show respect to his ethnic background.
How did he get into school being an illegal alien? How is he paying taxes without a SSN? Sounds pretty bogus to me.
He is what he does feel he is. If he feels like an american, and if he likes more his life as an american, if he does everything a regular american do, and if he plans to remain in US, i belive he must be considered un american.
He might actually qualify for citizenship under existing laws. Has he looked into that?
Your friend's situation is that - from the age of 18 or 21, depending on his state - he has been an adult illegal alien, and should have taken care of HIS OWN situation and stop blaming his parents.
Either he's a legal American or an illegal immigrant. He's known this for 26 years and has had 26 years to rectify the situation. He's paying taxes?? With what Social Security number?? He's got to go!!
I'm amazed how many people said he should be considered an American. Why?? Just because?? That's not good enough!! America is the land of oppotunity.not the land of opportunity at someone else's expense.
Since he is illegally here, from the legal standpoint he's not American, he's Mexican. Unfortunately there is many people like your friend in similar situations and they are not all Mexicans, there are people of other nationalities. This is a very tough situation, since he did not come over here on his own will, his parents brought him- but if he were to go back to his country, he would probably feel lost, since he grew up in US. Back in these days, everyone was able to get a SS# and that is how he got his probably- only recently laws changed and it's not that easy to get one if you are not a citizen or legal alien. I would say in this situation, he should be allowed to stay, but on the other hand, we must stop people from bringing in babies that grow up here and America is all they know, yet they are illegal.
No. buthe should go and try to get his papers, so he can be liegalized..
You answered this question yourself. MY FRIEND IS ILLEGAL. He has ILLEGALLY used our tax based schools, medical facilities and other benefits to which he has no rights. I know it's tough to think of, but consider all the immigrants who want to become Americans by going through the approved passages. Your friend has placed himself in front of all LEGAL immigrants. Is that fair?
Regardless how many years he's lived here, what he's done, or where he went to school, he was brought here illegally and should be deported! I can't help that it wasn't his decision! If he wants to complain or be upset, then he should complain to his parents! THEY ARE WHAT CAUSED HIS PROBLEM! He is NOT American he is MEXICAN! He needs to go through the process just like everyone else! Sorry, I know you aren't going to like hearing this, but the truth is the truth! You don't reward criminals or their children!
first, confiscate everything he has, to reimburse the taxpayer for elementary, middle, high school, community college stolen from the citizens
then, boot his illegal butt out of this country!
I asked a similar question today and pretty much got the same response which tells me that i feel as if i'm right when i say that it really is a matter of where he came from - mexico. I bet if he was canadian or european they'd say something else. They don't care that he grew up here and considers himself American. All they heard was that he was from Mexico.
I say let him stay.
But guess what Fools It is not up to you. The DREAM ACT says he will be legal.
The DREAM Act would provide a path to legality for persons brought illegally to the United States by their parents as children, or whose parents attempted to immigrate legally but were then denied legality after several years in application, and whose children thus derived their legal status solely from their parents (the child also becoming illegal upon the parent's denial).
To qualify, the immigrant student would have to meet certain requirements such as:
Proof of having arrived in the United States before reaching 16 years of age;
Proof of residence in the United States for a least five (5) consecutive years since their date of arrival.
Having graduated from an American High School, or obtained a GED.
"Good moral character," essentially defined as the absence of a significant criminal record (or any drug charges whatsoever).
you said he was not born here so he is mexican. even if he was born here they would not make him american. to be american one of your parents much be a citzen.
