What year did the US start requiring immigrants to pass a citizenship test for naturalization?
Answer:
In 1917, Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1917, overriding a presidential veto, requiring a test of literacy.
Literacy in English. The last bill to affirm testing which has been was in 2001, and continued to require passing a very simple test of 10 questions on history and government of which only six must be answered correctly.
The standardized test came into use in 1986, replacing the oral interview. Prior to the standardized test, the judge or naturalizing authority was required to validate the applicant's "good moral character and attachment to the Constitution." Knowledge of English became a requirement in 1906.
Great idea but ONLY if US citizens are required to take the same test .Anything else smells of RACISM as you would be deliberately requiring of one group something you do not demand of another group in respect to citizenship.
