Expired visa?

how can an immigarnt who came to the states with a visa, but now has expired years ago, get a green card and become a permanent resident without going back to their place of origin? is marrying a citizen of the u.s.a. the only way to have that immigrant become a permanent resident and then having him/her become a u.s citizen?

Answer:
If it expired years ago, that person became an illegal alien years ago and deserves no consideration above those of legal immigrants. That person has had years to rectify the situation, but did not. Marriage is not an automatic path, and if proven fraudulent, can result in penalties to both parties.
I think there is a 'get a green card' reality tv show you could try. But, as of now - you are here illegally!
now your status is illegal immigrant. You will need speak with an immigration lawyer.
I agree that you need to speak with an immigration lawyer. From personal experience, you might try going to Canada. I know some people that have done it. You apply for a Canadian Tourist Visa, and then make an appointment at one of the US Consular Offices, and usually, you will get the stamp the same day. I've been told that you shouldn't go to Calgary, though. I am not sure why.
