if you are here as a dependent,yes you have to apply and get the job.the bad part is you have to leave the country in some cases and get the job and new visa and then you may enter,.your stay would be illegal if the relationship breaks and once they come to know they can kick you out for 3 years,

if the relationship ends within a year, they may not apply for a new visa to america, they must live with the law that the relationship must be 2 years living together, if not, they broke their contract and it wont be renewed.
