What do you think of this solution for illegal immigration?

Many americans won't do menial jobs like busboys and picking lettuce, because we have become accustomed to comfy lifestyles which we don't truly appreciate. Instead of focusing on acquiring wealth and possessions, why not have institute a program requiring people to live in hardship, picking tomatoes in the fields, with very few luxuries, for a few weeks, that way when we come back to our regular homes and jobs, it will feel like we've just stumbled into luxury. Since the perception of wealth has to do with acquiring rather than the having, we can feel like we are becoming wealthy if we just force ourselves to live in poverty for a few weeks. And all this is gained without having to gain anything that we didn't already have. And we solve the labor shortage, if every american citzen were required to do this on some rotational basis. Everyone wins.

Answer:
Its not a labor shortage, if these cheap a** agriculture producers would just pay a fare wage. They cry they don't make enough money, to pay a standard wage. Its easier to set up a bunch of "illegals" in shacks and have them tend thier crops, then it is to hire an U.S. Citizen and pay him min. wage, and have to pay for workmens comp. And I know U.S. citizens who were pushed out of these jobs, because the "illegals" will do it cheaper. Its hard for a producer who doesn't hire "illegals" to compete with one who does.
Paying fare wages is a far more easier solution than, rotating U.S. citizens.
How about no.
Why not call ourselves the USSR?
u should be president...

u think outside the box...
sounds good. how many do you think can leave their high paying jobs to do this? none. the only ones who will do these jobs are the poor and middle class. i pick veggies everyday in my garden. yes it is back breaking work, but the reward afterward are great.
I totally disagree with u go home
How about that's unconstitutional. However implementing harvest picks for students at school would be a more viable option. And most definitely educational. Sometimes it helps to understand our history. Why? because this is exactly what we used to do. Thats one of the reasons kids got a break during the summer out of school. Knowledge of history as it once (and still does in some areas of the country)applied...understand it.
To Laurana: Your point is duly noted and you offered a good argument. However we still have (granted whats left of it) "rule of law "in this country dear. I do however understand what you are saying.
To uhateme: You're right friend. I may not agree with everything you say all the time, but you have made some pretty good key arguments with which i have agreed.
You are sorely confused.
It's not that "many Americans won't do menial jobs". It is that most Americans won't do those jobs for wages that force them to live 15 deep in a one bedroom apartment!
Once all the willing illegals are gone those wages will rise.
And how would this help the small business owner that has his employees pulled away for a few weeks. It could be what pulls them under. Or they may have to hire another to replace you, and you would have no job to come home to.
I agree most Americans have no appreciation for what they have. I spent a lot of time overseas, and have seen poverty at its worst, and its always bothered me that when I come home I see such over consumption in America.
I feel sorry for the Hispanics right now. It's like they are the new push around group. The talk of building 50 foot border fences, and such. I don't see us heading to Africa, or Asia to border up other minority groups at the moment. I just know that if my children were hungry I would try to get them a better life also. If it meant crossing illegally into another country to do so, I guess I would do that too.
Thats socialist garbage you and joe kennedy should go work for chavez down in venezuela and leave us freebirds alone
