How long does it usually take to get a greencard when a non-citizen is marrying a American?
Answer:
you will get a 2 year conditional permanent residency when a non-citizen marries a citizen. Before the expiration of the 2 years and you are still married to the same person - you can apply to have the conditions removed and then you can get a 10-yr permanent residency. How soon before you can have the actual greencard depends on which state you are in and how many applications are submitted before yours.
It has taken my friend almost 4 years.. and still not done. They DO, though, have a new date set for his 2nd interview in September.
It can take a long time, as with all paperwork from the government. If they want to become a citizen as well, that can take many many years. A close family friend waited 10 years before they finally gave him citizenship.
takes a few months to get the resident alien status and a minimum of five years for citizenship. you have to stay married for five years. believe me, the question the crap out of the two of you seperately. if its a marrage of convieniance they will find out and the immigrant will be deported.
It can take quite a few years, example I have waited 17 years and I am the unmarried son of an American.
In regards to post below, sorry but not true, financial status does not help, I am a millionaire with legal rights and I have still been waiting 17 years while I have heard lesser situations processed first, it is almost like immigration blindly dips in a barrel of names to choose for processing.
As bad as it sounds there is a serious double standard for this that is greatly effected by the applicant's socio-economic status. A well educated, financially stable individual with a job prospect is streamlined through the system in comparison with a less educated person who could muddle through the system for years.
If you are in the U.S., it should take between 10 and 12 months depending on where you live.
If you are outside the US, around 18 months depending on which consulate will interview you. You have a few options if you aren't married yet, including a fiance visa, which might be faster good luck.
It's quicker to file illegal alien status.
it is the same time if you married or not only if you have a lawyer it some times can go faster for you
