How easy it is to apply for US citizenship? Can I do it myself or need an Immigration lawyer?

We are the US permanent residents for over five years. Since we are now eligible for US citizenship, I would like to know how difficult or easy it is to apply for citizenship. What are the things to watch out for?

Answer:
not that hard. if you have not commited any crimes it can take about a year. the paperwork is not that hard. my ex applied the year we married. the fees are going way up so apply now. congrats and hello new american citizens!

they have a new piliot test program that means the test they give you will be harder. go to www.usa.gov to study up or the immg website

PS no one said this if you read and write english and you do, do it yourself. it is only about 2 and a half pages. i have seen job application harder than this!

generally they want you to have some knowledge of civic, govt and things like that.

i have had the honor to attend a few of these ceremonies. they show what a melting pot the us and it made me even more grateful to have been born here. good luck!
Either way works. An attorney can get it done quicker. Welcome. And thanks for doing it Legal.
Get a good laywer. It will cost you $12,000.
It's not difficult at all - just paperwork. Here are all the information and instructions:

I wouldn't bother with a lawyer unless you're rich and in a hurry, or if you run into difficulties. The information can be tough to dig up, but it's there if you have the time to look... visit USCIS, find out at least where you have to apply, go there first and make sure they give you all the information you need. Man, I hope for your sake it's not more difficult than the permanent residence.
my son just got his citizenship in November 2006. he applied over the Internet, it took him 7 month.
I did it with a lawyer in 2000, I payed $ 500.00 in new york
no need for a laywer, just turn yourself in and get deported, please

thank you
JJ you are a dumb asss they are residents Go to the immigration office and they will help you do it for free
Completing the form N-400 is your first test. If you can't complete it yourself you probably won't pass the test. If a male and resided in U.S. between ages of 18-26 you should have registered with the Selective Service System, you can verify this at www.sss.gov and also you should not have any criminal record for the 5 years preceding the application date. I suggest you go to www.uscis.gov and take the eligibly test for Naturalization..
Very Easy you can download the form from USCIS.COM

if you do it without an attorney you only have to pay $330.00 for the application and $70.00 for the finger prints now make sure that if you want to save some money you do it before June because the fees have increased and will become effective in June. ( new fees $595 +$80)

Congratulations!
It's very, very easy. If you can read instructions, and follow them, there's no reason you can't do it all yourself. Hiring an attorney is a complete waste of money.
