What happens when someone is caught residing in Australia illegally?

The person is held in custody in a detention centre whilst the matter is investigated. If they plea for asylum due to persecution based on political or religious beliefs, the case may be investigated but eventually the person will be deported.

At least some of the time, people are detained in detention camps and forcibly repatriated (for example Cornelia Row who was forcible repatriated to the Philippines because she was mistaken for an illegal immigrant.)
This is obviously expensive but DIMIA is not providing statistics on how many illegals they find and don't deport.
You can get deported or put in jail until they are able to send you back. Best get yourself a lawyer to settle this one. He/she can give you some advice.

They get sent to the detention centres. There they wait until someone from DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship) actually looks at their case file and determines what should be done with them.
i hope the send them back where they came from , and i wish the united states will do the same without mercy. they violated the law then they should be punished. period!

Depending on a successfull analysis he usually accepts how laughable and foolish it was for him to have made the choice of AUSTRALIA, After all WHO in their right mind would want to live in Australia? he should be given the, congressional medal of honor, and a couple thousand head of sheep, and a nice wee house in ALICE SPRINGS..
