What do you think of this ...Teddy Roosevelt said it back in 1907, you may be surprised!?
Answer:
You forgot where he points out that there should not be hyphinated Americans. No Irish-American, no Jewish American, no, Italian-American, etc. just Americans. If that is the direction we are going, I am all for it. What we have now I cannot stand.
I love TR and totally agree with his sentiment here.
It wasn't until 1918 that we even had stringent controls on immigration. I don't think people understand that their great grandparents weren't illegal, the concept simply did not exist.
I think it's terrific, especially since I POSTED IT in another answer to you yesterday!
Amazing how we refuse to learn anything from history.
I agree with it. I'm also not that surprised with it, America has always been a country of immigrants.
Bravo. We need another Teddy.
I think Jesus had a better saying: "Love your neighbor as yourself". Wouldn't that take care of all the problems ?
I didn't see anywhere that if they whine enough we should just give in and give every criminal who entered illegally citizenship. Maybe there's a reason.
I have no problem with people coming here to live, as long as they do it legally. If they want to live in America, they need to abide by the laws just as everyone else does. If you come in the US illegaly, you are breaking the law and are therfore a criminal.
AMEN!!
The law is the law!! We shouldnt have to bend it for people who really dont want to be americans and are illegal.
I think it's intelligent and topical. We have a great country and it should be open to those who want to truly join, but not a convenient workplace for those who are visiting. I have worked alongside many immigrants and perhaps not all of them were legal - I can tell you that the attitude of sole loyalty can exist but it is rare.
Wish we had a President with a backbone and that would uphold the law like good ole Teddy again, Bush needs to be Impeached.
IT'S TRUE! BUT PEOPLE ARE NOT PROUD TO BE AMERICANS ANYMORE! THEY DON'T FOLLOW THOSE GUIDELINES! PEOPLE STILL HOLD ON TO THEIR OLD FLAGS, OLD LANGUAGES,OLD LOYALTIES! IF THEY CAN'T BECOME FULLY AMERICAN THEN THEY SHOULD
RETURN TO THE COUNTRIES THEY IMMIGRATED FROM! IT TAKES AWAY FROM THIS GREAT NATION !
"IF YOU ARE NOT FOR US..THEN YOU ARE AGAINST US!"
UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL!
All those were nice sentiments back in 1907, when the immigrants coming here were coming in good faith. However, 100 years later, that is not always the case. Even if it is for 99.9% of the time, we need to look out for that .1% that wish to do us harm. To do otherwise would not be responsable. Also, the people Teddy Roosevelt were speaking of came here lagally, unless you believe that European immigrints swam an ocean in order to come here illegally. It's too easy today to sneak acooss our porius borders illeglly, with bad intentions, to keep using the same immagration policy that we did 100 years ago.
He also said,"Walk softly but carry a big stick." It is a great speech that bares repeating. Thanks for looking this one up. My grandfather who was a immigrant from Germany fought along with "Teddy" in the Spanish-American war.I know what it means to assimilate, having family and friends from all over the world,I wish more people would take heed to Mr. Roosevelt!...
