H1B visa processing time and fees.?

I am on a F1 visa and I got a job in research. The PI has agreed for the processing of H1 visa...but he is looking to speed up the process. I heard that the avergage H1 visa processing takes around 2 to 3 months. I want to know the fee of normal H1 processing vs. premium processing. And also the time for processing. I would really appreciate your input regarding this. I would really want to know all the details before approaching the HR department for my options.
Note: Its not the J1 research visa I am looking to file. Its the H1B visa.

Answer:
Of course you can expedite the process by using premium processing for an additional 1000 $. The USCIS will decide on your case within 2 weeks of the receipt of your application.
If your employer doesn't fall under the cap(eg. some government and research institutions) you need not bother about the cap on visas and you can apply anytime.
Best of luck.
Has anyone told you that H1B's have been exhausted for 2007? they were exhausted in only one day. An attorney who specializes in immigration law would know how to push it through.
Unless you've previously held an H-1B, your'e out of luck this fiscal year because the visas are exhausted (you may already know this).

The next application period opens April 1 (6 months prior to the beginning of the new fiscal year which starts Oct 1, 2008). You can petition for an H April 1--recommended as these visas go fast--but then you'll have to wait until Oct 1 to work. If you're on the one year of OPT right now, it will expire before you start the H and you'll have a gap in status. You may need to continue work on the EAD under OPT and expect to leave when the OPT expires, consular process for the H and reenter with it in Oct.

Ok, as far as cost. I-129 petition: $190; DOL ACWIA fee $1500 ($750 if company has fewer than 25 employees); Fraud fee $500. If you want premium processing it's an additional $1000.
Ditto what everyone else said. You can get it processed in two weeks if you have an extra $1,000, but still, you do not have the H status until October 2008, if you are lucky enough to get one, so your $1,000 pretty much only pays for your peace of mind.
