How does a Canadian marry and American?
Answer:
From what I know, based on my daughter's room mates (a Canadian married to an American soldier):
1. The entire American immigrations process is horribly screwed up. ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, as I recall) has a horrible reputation. Don't expect this to be done soon, and w/o lots of frustration.
2. Have your boyfriend / husband contact his Senator to find out the best way to handle this. He'll get to know his Senator and staff over the next 2 years.
3. You can come over as a tourist, and stay for 90 days. Perhaps it would be best for you to talk to the American embassy or consulate near you, and get a tourist visa.
4. You are trying for a "green card" that says you are a "resident alien." This means you can stay and work in the USA. If you have an employer in the USA that is willing to work through the paperwork to help you get your green card, then that might help things greatly. After all, the USA doesn't want more unemployed people.
Congrats... and on behalf of Americans everywhere, I'm sorry that this part of our government is so screwed up.
ADDENDUM *********
And I'm sorry for jerks who don't welcome good, hardworking people to the USA.
It would be better for you to stay in CANADA. And by the way, why are you making that mistake?
