Could i just sneak into the UK by going on vacation and then finding a job?

i am an american who is thinking about moving to london. should i just sneak in and get a job or should i try to apply first.

Answer:
Why not come in as a tourist and look for regular work. Ask the potential employer if they will sponsor you - many will. If they will then they apply for a work permit.

You have to be out of the UK for 1 to 3 weeks whilst the application outcome is determined and then you return and work legally. If you are to get the work permit, you need to have 3 years experience in the work you are applying for. The work needs to have a certain skill level. The rules are easier for degree holders working within their discipline. You need to work here in legal employment for 3 months BEFORE your can apply for a National Insurance number. With recent amendments you can apply for this via your employer. The initial three months are on a number consisting of your birth date and your sex (i.e. 29121980F - If you are a girl)

If you work here as an illegal, you will be exploited, given really poor wages forcing you to live in ways that should not be acceptable to you. If you haven’t been to the UK before, I think you are in for a real shock! I agree with Bridget F who working in a counselling field so read her comments. I work in outward immigration and sponsor my employees regularly so also know something about it.

Best things here include moderate levels of illegal weapons and gun crime (compared to parts of the USA), close to Europe, high exchange rate when spending UK £ abroad, lots of cheap drugs (for those who want them), good buzz, generally nice people if you avoid the (lots of) poor areas.

Bad things are costs, costs, costs, high knife crime rates though, generally rubbish and VERY expensive housing, lots of cheap drugs (for those who want them), good buzz in night life, costs, costs , costs. Don’t expect to afford a car; you have to use public transport if you are a worker. Cars are for the better off or people outside the cities.

For most ordinary legal workers in the cities it’s a hard life, long hours, poor wages and quite a low standard of living. It must be amongst the lowest standard amongst in the first world countries. Think of poor suburbs like Inglewood in LA - that would be quite upmarket here! Be prepared to live a level below what most Americans would think is acceptable.

I think Europe is great if you earn lots and lots of GB£. You start getting better at about 50K, but to get really going 80 to 100kpa is best. Of course, like most places having pots of money is always good.

For most ordinary wages types other countries like Australia and Canada can offer a much better overall lifestyle. (Don’t try illegal in Australia – their technology and systems are much more advanced than the USA or UK and they will find you and deport you. Believe me, you would get a real surprise at what they can do and they are paranoid about illegals)

Good luck on your efforts. Let me know how it goes for you.
You need National Insurence number to work legally and you need to be interviewed to get one,so you could try sneaking in but if court you would be imprisioned and so would your boss for illegally hiring you.
You will find it hard to get anything in the way of decent work without proper 'leave to remain'.
Employers are now penalised for hiring staff who are not entitled to work. Proper employment agencies won't look at you.
If you are here as a student you are entitled to work part-time. But not if you are here on holiday.

I am sure other posters will put up messages about how easy it is for illegal immigrants to get work here. That's the media hype. The reality is that without the right immigration status the only work available for non EU citizens is temporary and lowpaid, and probably dirty or dangerous too.
Maybe if you had a cash in hand job in some little bar it might be ok. But I dont see the harm in applying, if they say no, then try and sneak in anyway.
Yeah apply first I dont think it will be a problem, just a bit of annoying paperwork then you are sorted!
Why sneak in?. The front door is open.
Yes of course. Get a tourist visa, then just get yourself some income.

You run the usual risks of course but what the hell...you are not black so it should be ok.

I hope you are not attractive though because when it comes to getting your work permit eventually...the fine upstanding British immigration officers will want to have sex with you.

You shouldn't worry about this..it is just because we are a civilised country who know all about racism! How to do it...how to benefit from it...and how to ignore it!!

WELCOME!!!
The question is, are there any good jobs in the UK?
You need a social security number to work in the US; the same applies here; you will nead a National Insurance number. Easiest way is to marry a UK citizen!
As others have said, it would be difficult to find a good job. It is said that Americans are the largest single nationality of overstayers/illegals in UK, it's not too difficult to stay on for a while, but what's the point? Eventually you'll get yourself in trouble, all for the sake of doing a crappy job. It's OK for a few months, but not as a long-term option.

As for applying, if you check

http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/front?...

you will see the various types of visas you can apply for, it's less than straightforward unless you have some particular skill. Also have a look at

http://www.workingintheuk.gov.uk/working...

Good luck!
Oh no hun, don't sneak in, apply first. It really isn't worth the risk. x
go for it theres thousands like u
Why would you even consider it?
Thats not possible now as you need nat ins number employers are being targeted and face large fines for employing ilegal workers. apply legally.
Do you mean finding an illegal cash-in-hand job, or finding a proper job that will sponsor you for a visa?

If you want a crappy cash in hand job don't do it to yourself. You will be paid £2.50 an hour, absolutley nothing. There are plenty of legal workers coming over from poland and bulgaria who are happy to work for nothing, there is no reason why empoyers need to risk getting busted to hire you, when someone legal will work for peanuts.

if you mean looking for a legit job that will sponsor you, go ahead, search on a tourist visa, but remember it can take a long time to find someone who likes you enough to go through the song and dance of sponsoring your visa and your savings will not last very long in London.
Ah someone from the West - come and join all the incomers from the East!
I wouldnt recomend it.The uk has enough illegal immigrants in the country.Just because u are american dont make it right.Being canadian im even finding it hard to stay legal and i have a british partner and child but i am still going the right way.If you sneak in then you are as bad as the romanians polish and pakistanis who do the same.its over run here with illegal people. If you want to come here even though there is enough i would do it legal.plus if you cant prove you can support yourself to the immigration officers on arrival they will turn you away :D
You should apply first. You will need a national insurance number to get a job legally. :-)
don't even come here stay away we don't want you sneaky feck
Why the f**k not, half of Eastern Europe does.
sneak in and get a job? what on earth makes you think that this is possible? Oh, you've watched our News programmes. Okay over you come then, I suppose with Bush as your President you can claim asylum and get free everything on the taxpayer.
You could always apply for work as a civilian with the US military based in the UK....there are still quite a number of bases within striking distance of the capital.
