How long you have to live in the UK before you can apply for a British Passport?

I am asking for a friend who is living and working here from Slovakia. She wants to know how long she has to be in this country before she can apply for a British Passport.
Thanks

Answer:
5 years.
4 years, but you have to apply for permanent residency first and then citizenship.
Well first she needs to be registered for citizenship, whats wrong with keeping her own passport, Oh forgot, free welfare services, free NHS, free housing.
Anyone that is just here for a passport well.
i think its about 5 years and then you can claim residentcy
You do not apply for a UK passport. You apply to be naturalised as a British Citizen. Once you are a British Citizen, then you will have the right to apply for a UK passport.

You need to have been legally resident in the UK for 5 years, so any gaps where you have had no visa will disqualify you. You must also have had leave to remain indefinitely in the UK for at least 12 months, in other words, no restrictions on your visa status. (As Slovenia is in the EU, this means your friend should meet this Visa requirement).

If you are married to a UK citizen then this requirement is reduced to 3 years.
What's wrong with her Slovakian passport?
It is not as simple as that! You do not qualify for UK nationality just because you live here. I am an immigration solicitor. As Slovakia is part of EU then I do not see why she should want a UK passport any longer.
when shes a British citizen.
She needs to hold permanent status first before she can become a British citizen. The route for her would be as follows under EU law: WRS for 1 year (IF she is subject to registration and does not fall within the exemption), then application for a Registration Certificate and then after 5 years of having exercised a Treaty right, application for indefinite permission to remain under the 2006 Regs, then application for naturalisation and then passport. Under UK law, she would either have to get married to a British citizen and then apply after having resided in the UK for 3 years or she could apply under the 10 year rule if she's been in the country long enough. Whichever of the above is SOONER.
Well if she is working for a minimum wage and sending it home tell her to follow it...Go now. Sorry.
Govenment love people Who come and Earn under a fiver an hour. hey But she can stay if she goe's into debt for an education. You think about it.
she would have to become a British citizen first and then apply. As Slovakia is a member of the EU would there be any particular benefits in her having a British passport?
