Is it time to erase these words from the Statue of Liberty?

I mean, give me a break, who believes in this anymore?

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

Answer:
Those words need to be sandblasted from the statue forever because the people living here now do not believe one word of it. They have forgotten what it means to struggle and suffer and are content to be fat and lazy and secure everything for themselves only.
Yes, that time has passed.
Yeah seems like people are taking it out of context and wearing out their welcome.
yes as dont apply anymore
no..But everyone came here through Ellis IS. then documented and legal.
im from las vegas..i never knew it said that on the statue of liberty.
Yes those words still do apply - for people who come in to this country LEGALLY.
This country has done this for people all over the world not just here in the United States. It is the motto for democracy and freedom.

Just because we have millions of people who break the law to steal from the rest of us CITIZENS doesn't mean that we will ignore those who ask for our help properly.
Of course we should not erase them. The US is a refuge for many "tired and poor" seeking a better life. Are you not aware of the many legal immigrants accepted into this country as well as the numerous refugee communities in the US helped by federal grant programs specifically for them? I'm a grant writer who scans the newly-announced federal grants every day and I assure you they're out there. A quick search at cfda.gov should help you see that erasing those words from the Statue would not negate the fact that this country still welcomes the tired and poor.
For many immigrants who came to the United States by ship in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Statue of Liberty made a permanent impression as the first landmark they saw as they approached their new home. And it's an important part of history I say it stays on the Statue.
The statue was givven as a present to USA from the French Republic and it is historical. It doesn't need anything to erase from it!!! It reminding those old historical times .
Did America put it on the Statue of Liberty, Or France?
No. That's still true for legal immigrants.

So in that spirit rather than take words off, I propose we add the following words:

"Please show your paperwork at the golden door."
Yeah its time to erase it! Most American's don't feel compassion for the poor. And I agree, only those with money can enter the US, money that these poor immigrants don't have, therefore they are forced to immigrate illegally!
MONEY TALKS!
Can they live at your house and you take care of them?
YOU DON'T KNOW HISTORY. We accepted poor, homeless, wretched masses for years. The came to the appropriate place ( Ellis Island ) and were checked for diseases and properly ( AND LEGALLY ) processed. My Great Great Great Grandparents from both sides of my family came from Germany and Ireland, THE LEGAL WAY !! There are LEGAL ways and processes to immigrate here today.
You hit the nail right on the head!!! Only people that are not poor are welcome in America. All this BS about legal and illegal is a smoke screen. If your skin color is dark, then you are double screwed!!! Poor and dark skinned, we do not want your sort in our country!!! How sad. So definitely, erase those words from the Statue of Liberty, they do not mean anything anymore.
It is time to put a stop on it and we the USA citizens will tell our government when to take the stop off and allow immigrants again.
Yes
We still do ... we have many many programs and laws set up to help people come to this country legally.. it's not only rich people that are able to come here... look into our laws and programs that bring many many immigrants here... not all is permanent..such as the migrant program- but it still gets them here and their foot in the door, gives them jobs, and a place to live
If the 'huddled masses' would become members of society by: coming here legally, speaking English, understanding our traditions (and how this country has evolved since the Statue of Liberty was placed here), respecting our laws, branching out, & actually joining into what they see as their 'new world' [cough] -- most Americans wouldn't have such a problem w/ them. Instead, our new neighbors have erected picket fences painted bright reds and yellows --- from which we can hear the roosters crowing 24/7. Dirty diapers appear in Grandma's back yard. And we are assailed by children at the parks and supermarket which other children cannot mingle with as they're speaking Spanish and loitering around, still; in HUDDLED MASSES.
Yes. The message is for a welcoming and compassionate nation. We don't deserve those words.

Poor huddled masses can't immigrate legally now.

If you feel compelled to describe with moral superiority your own family's LEGAL immigration through Ellis Island, please put the back of your hand to your forehead and bemoan the difficulty they had in presenting a passport and waiting in line for about 5 hours.
Makes no sense, this is a great example of the ignorance some people have on this issue - Complainers need to go after the people they help get elected that continue to create this kind of mess.
The few powerful "Elite" families like the Cheney's in the U.S. have prostituted big business in the USA to become the leaders of the "New World Order" - by sending jobs overseas and strengthening the countries that always end up turning on us. So, in order to compete with India, Taiwan, China, and all the others - we in the USA have to accept slave wages that only the illegal immigrants are willing to take - in order to compete with this "new world economy" that the "Elite" manufactured. Racists continue vote for these "Elite" people, cause they think that they would help their "racist cause" - but these "Elites" only know 1 color - Green, and could careless about them, you, me or the illegal immigrants.
We don't need to erase or rewrite our history--more than enough of that has been done to demean our forefathers and the history of a truly incredible nation. (Not to say there haven't been some major mistakes in our past, but overall America has done more good and helped more countries than any other.)

Anyway, we are still an incredibly caring and compassionate nation, however, there is a limit to the amount of "refuse" our tax system can bear, especially as we are near the breaking point already.
By implementing more stringent laws (or at least enforcing the ones already on the books), we will hopefully reduce the sheer volume of illegal immigrants coming here to obtain better pay, free health care, and free educations (all this while avoiding taxes and sending their money back to Mexico).
I'm all for helping people, but where should the money to pay for all of this do-gooding come from? Is it okay with you because the government will pay for it all? The government exacts the funds in its treasury from US, the taxpayers.
You can't really tax corporations as they simply pass on extra tax expenses to us, their customers. So you're left with piling on even more punitive taxes on income and property.
Taxing the rich to pay for these programs will only work for so long, though, before the rich move elsewhere to try to keep and enjoy their earnings. And who could blame them? Why should they work even harder so they can give away even more of their money to the government? Especially if those hard-earned dollars go to pay for an illegal immigrant to use our hospitals to have a baby who will later be educated in our schools?
How long would you put up with forking over almost half of your paycheck each month to someone who had violated our laws to get to the US? And how long would you tolerate that illegal sending home most of his paycheck so the US not only lost the job he holds here, but the social security and tax revenue from it as well... Don't assume it's only the "rich" who will pay for illegals--it costs us ALL!
