Do I need a F-1 visa (I-20)?

I'm a Canadian citizen and I would like to take a few 8-week classes this summer in the US. I'll be in the US for a total of 10 weeks and then returning back home. Do I need a F-1 visa/Sevis/I-20?

Answer:
Don't listen to that person. Though you do not necessarily need a visa to come into the country for that amount of time, you need to be on a student visa to take these classes. If you're applying to a reputable school, they won't let you do anything without an I-20. I did a lot of short term F-1 visas for our summer programs and it isn't that much more of a hassle. In the long run, you don't want to jeapordize coming back to the US because you didn't want to take the time to get an F-1 for the summer.
Since you are Canadian and are also not exceeding a 6 month visit to the US, you will not need to get a visa to enter or stay within the US during this time. You do not need an F-1 visa because your classes are only for 8 weeks, you will not be a full-time student.
Just make sure that you always carry your identification with you when crossing the boarder.

Take care.
