Why would Congress pass new immigration bill when there are torn apart families that have been waiting first?

The new immigration bill means illegal immigrants can live here legally. I am a U.S. citizen that met a girl in high school and got married. She was brought in illegally as a 7 year old girl with no choice but to cross the border. So, I try to do things the right way which is to pay a lot of money, throw away my job, and spend lots of time at the U.S. Consulate in Mexico to allow my wife to get a social security number, drivers license and so on just like everyone else right??? No, they say she crossed illegally and has to pay a punishment of staying in Mexico for up to 10 years! Now I either go to Mexico and lose everything I've ever worked for or I lose my wife and my 3 year old daughter. The new immigration law means that everyone here illegally right now will be rewarded to stay. Is that fair when I've tryed to do everything the right way, by the law, by the book, and they've sent my family away? Not even close. Why doesn't Congress see this? THEY SEPERATED ME FROM MY FAMILY!!!

Answer:
First of all--cudos to you for doing the right thing and attempting to hold your family together legally. Your wife's circumstances were not her doing, but our irresponsible, self-interested government officials allowed a situation in which her parents were able to subvert the law and come here to stay. Their consistent bowing to special interests who want only the masses for cheap labor and downward pressure on wages for legal citizens were able to buy enough congressional representatives to allow this to happen, and here we are. The only moral and ethical way for congress to act now is to enforce what has already been in place for years, and force all illegals to go through the painful processes you have experienced if they really want to stay here. I know this is cold comfort in your particular situation, but I applaud the fact that you value citizenship highly enough to actually make persistent attempts at the legal process.
No, it is not fair at all. This is one of many reasons why this bill, or anything like it, should not be passed.
An endless supply of cheap labor. Favelas in the USA.
this law does not seem fair at all, especially in your case. people should come here legally, as many people have done so in the past, such as my relatives. i suggest that you write to your congressmember and bring up your story
Congress cares NADA about you OR your wife, send them a campaign contribution and they MIGHT become interested in
you.

OR, you could join her in Mexico, become a Muslim, then get PREFERRED status here.
The system wasn't fair to begin with. I sympathize with you, but this is about giving a fair chance to millions of people who yes, did break the law to get here, out of necessity for a decent life.

You should get an immigration lawyer. Since she was brought here as a minor she can't be held legally responsible.
As it stands right now...and it will change... those who were here after 2001 will be allowed to stay if they pursue citizenship and pay a fine. But who has an extra $5000 laying around?
However, there are Republicans who say... NO! They must go back to their own country to apply for citizenship there and no one will have any amnesty until the fence is built. So, there's a chance nothing will happen that will really be a good plan for families. I'm afraid there is nothing, at this time, that can help reunite your family.
