If this immigration bill actually gives amnesty, does that mean people are given citizenship?

NO! An immigrant is a person who moves to another country and intends to reside there permanently? When they immigrate legally, they first become lawful permanent residents. Lawful permanent residents ("LPRs") do not have the same rights as US citizens. They cannot vote. They can be deported. If they leave the US for too long, they can abandon their permanent residency.

If you are going to continue to opine about immigration issues, please learn at least this basic difference.

PS -- it's not even amnesty.

Answer:
Amnesty is a pardon of sorts.Paying a fine, back taxes, and a right to work but not benefit from that work other than a paycheck and allowed housing isn't amnesty. The ones who think it's for voter base are sadly mistaken since a resident not a citizen isn't allowed to vote.Citizenship is another whole ball game altogether.
All you anti-Mexican people must be so happy you can commune together and share your hate. I haven't seen so much rabid joyful hate since Americans began hating the Muslims. We must get together sometime and decide who to hate more, Mexican, Muslims or any other group that it is in to hate. It will be such a swell time hating together. Just think of the fun we will have hating everyone. Though it would be a drag if someone we hated came to our hate party. would really hate that.

Hey Mr. Perfect, I don't see you talking about impeaching Bush and Cheney and they can't do anything legal. Racism is racism.
Lets look at the deal... Under the tentative deal, illegal workers who crossed into the country before Jan. 1 would be offered a temporary-residency permit while they await a new "Z Visa" that would allow them to live and work lawfully here. The head of an illegal-immigrant household would have eight years to return to his or her home country to apply for permanent legal residence for members of the household, but each Z Visa itself would be renewable indefinitely, as long as the holder passes a criminal background check, remains fully employed and pays a $5,000 fine, plus a paperwork-processing fee.

It does not say they get citizenship and anyone who has read the bill thinks it does... what it does do... is allow illegals to stay and work without fear of the law. they can bring their families up and they take away opportunity that legal immigrants are looking for.. basically they get rewarded for breaking the law... then they get a leg up in applying for citizenship. Also... the illegals here.. aren't looking to become permanent residence... they are looking to leech off the system and send all they can back to ol' Mexico... You can sugar coat it all you want... it is still horrible for this country.
This immigration bill is not about amnesty. That's why illegal immigrants had to pay fine because they break a law.
Thank you Jenny for making that clear.I doubt many will understand it and you will get a lot of smart alec answers. No one seems to read with comprehension these days.Good job !!
Whatever your facts are it's still just a fine line. I don't think I would be rewarded if I did something illegal. I think they should be deported. I think people who are found employing them should be so heavily fined or jailed themselves, so it would not pay them to hire them. By the way they will not be lawful permanent residents. They will be Unlawful permanent residents
Jim San Antonio... I am not anti mexican..I am anti illegal, anti gangs and anti special entitlement, in my country..and I have a right to be. It is MY country..and we are free to have our thoughts and speak them. Illegals however have stolen those rights. I have nothing against LEGAL RESIDENTS. Illegals need to get busy, get honest and get legal. Until then, they have no right to whine. If our attitude bothers them..the way back is just as easy.
ATTN: Jim SanAntonio

We are against illegal.ILLEGAL!!

You're going out of your way to ensure we believe you have no idea what illegal means...there's a right way and a wrong way.and the wrong way makes you a trespasser and a thief.
No, amnesty doesn't give citizenship to anyone.
The bill, as it stands, would make the 11-20 mil persons who are in the U.S.A. illegally, legal so they MAY pursue citizenship if they don't mind paying fines, etc. It also gives their children a spot at the front of the line for higher education benefits.
If they don't want to pursue citizenship, pay fines, etc; nobody is going to hunt them down and deport them so why pursue citizenship?
What amnesty does: it removes the punishment aspect from what the criminal has done. It elevates the crime to a paying level. That's what the McCain - Kennedy Immigration bill does.
Stop the bleeding... Secure Our Borders.
yes they should be given citizenship. They deserve it alot
It rewards law breakers by not only forgiving the crime they committed but by letting them to continue to drain the services and overstrain the schools the laws were put there to protect in the first place.

Call it what you will.
You said " if they leave the U.S. for too long, they can abandon their permanent residency."

You are of course speaking about LEGAL immigrants, right?

The ILLEGALS are the problem. They don't follow the rules.
A lawful permanent resident (LPR) is just a transitional status. Overwhelming majority of LPRs become citizens.

So, YES! It is amnesty!
Couldn't have said it better myself!!

Thanks for clearing that up.

Ofcourse all the "wannabe minutemen" in this forum. Will completely ignore this truth and keep ranting away.
3 year bar from entering the USA? They're illegal immigrants, they don't care about no stinking bars, they'll come back long before then.
You are really naive to think that they are going to comply with any laws that disadvantage them. And really, they got into the country illegally, it's hardly difficult to imagine them leaving illegally to visit family back in Mexico, and probably to help them pack.
