Getting back in the country with a j1 visa but married?

I will be getting married to a US citizen soon and currently have a J1 visa. We intend going to the UK to see my family after getting married and then I plan to come back in the US under my J1. Then we intend filing all the paperwork for immigration. Is this possible with a J1 visa since this visa allows you in the country temporarily and I intend being here permanently?

Answer:
you shouldnt leave the us until you have your green card or citizenship because they dont have to let you in my friend had the problem where he was married to a us citizen and left to visit his family they wouldnt let him in cause he didnt have his green card they are very strict about that you have to start all over again with filiing for the fiancee visa its a lot of work my best advice for you would be to wait good luck look up the laws in your state though
Your J-1 visa has a maximum of 18 months, but may be valid for less than that time according to what time was asked for.

I issue J-1 visas to volunteers and as soon as they leave our program I notify the government.

I think you should come back to the US with a tourist visa.
Here's the problem. If you come back on the J-1, or come back on a tourist visa (waiver), you'll still have to lie to the immigration officer at the port of entry.

He's going to ask how long you intend to stay and you're going to either say, "I'm married and I intend to apply for change of status so I can stay as an immigrant." In this case you'll not be allowed to enter the country. You'll be turned around and put back on the next plane to the UK.

Or, you're going to say, " (insert lie here)." In which case they'll let you back in the USA.

Things could get very sticky when you start the immigration process and they see you got married, left the country and then returned. The first thing CIS is going to wonder is how that happened and what you told the Immigration Officer at the port of entry.

Do you really need trouble from the CIS? Why not postpone the UK visit until after you've gotten approval for your Green Card. You can then apply for a Travel Permit using Form I-131. You can find all the forms here..

Get married, file the I-130, they are currently working on December 2006, get your approval before you leave the country. The paperwork is rough. But do it right, don't take any chances. How horrible if you got married and couldn't be together. Or maybe you can renew your J1 and get an extension.. Good Luck
